Job Summary :

Work as part of a crew installing, maintaining, and repairing the Campus utilities distribution systems for steam, chilled water, potable water, storm and sanitary sewer collection systems, natural gas, and the related utilities metering devices.

Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance and repair on existing utilities distribution systems and related equipment for domestic water, heating and chilled water, steam and condensate, natural gas, and sanitary and storm sewer lines.

Perform according to industry guidelines and approved OSU standard practices, the installation of various types of pipe, fittings, and related equipment / accessories on existing and new utilities distribution systems throughout the Stillwater campus (domestic water, heating and chilled water, steam and condensate, natural gas, trap lines, and sanitary and storm sewer lines.)

Use Energy Services’ Geographic Information System to identify, notate, and electronically log precise data on utilities distribution assets location, type, operational status, maintenance records, and any findings.

Employee in this position is required to be on rotating standby for emergencies and / or any other event after 4 p.m. weekdays, weekends and holidays.

Employee in this position is required to work overtime when work requires.

Must use appropriate personal protective equipment as required (hard hat, vest, gloves, safety glasses, etc.). These items are provided and are not for personal use.

Must work safely and promote a safe work environment.

The employee in this position will be exposed to high levels of dust. noise, and will work around or operate hazardous equipment.

The employee in this position handles explosive gasses (natural gas) and raw sewage. They will also work in confined spaces, in and around excavations.

Other common utility-related environmental hazards may be encountered.

Work is outside in all types of inclement weather with exposure to extreme heat and cold.

This position is heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally.

Required Qualifications :

High School / GED

Distribution Plumber I – one year of work experience utilizing basic hand tools (Shovel, Hammer, Wrench, Etc.). ODEQ Class “D” Water and Wastewater license within 90-days of hire and Natural Gas “Operator Qualified” qualification within one year of hire. Will require working knowledge utilizing basic hand tools (Shovel, Hammer, Wrench, Etc.).

Distribution Plumber II – four years of work experience with at least three years of experience in utilities or a related field. ODEQ Class “D” Water and Wastewater license and polyethylene fusion welding certification upon hire. Natural Gas “Operator Qualified” qualification within one year of hire. Will require basic understanding of utilities metering principles. Basic understanding of OSU Utilities Distribution system routing and components and of OSU Utilities Distribution systems key valve locations upon hire or within 6 months of hire and be qualified in Utilities Distribution systems maintenance as verified by the OSU Utilities Distribution training record or a previous employer.

Distribution Plumber III – seven years of work experience with at least six years of experience in utilities or a directly related field and at least one year of experience operating heavy equipment. ODEQ Class “D” Water and Wastewater license, certification in trenching / shoring and confined entry space techniques, and polyethylene fusion welding certification upon hire. Natural Gas “Operator Qualified” qualification and an industry certified welder’s license within one year of hire. Will require basic understanding of utilities metering principles and experience in operating heavy equipment. Basic understanding of OSU Utilities Distribution system routing and components and of OSU Utilities Distribution systems key valve locations upon hire or within 6 months of hire and be qualified in Utilities Distribution systems maintenance as verified by the OSU Utilities Distribution training record or a previous employer.

Distribution Plumber IV – ten years of work experience with at least eight years of experience in utilities or a directly related field and at least one year of experience operating heavy equipment. ODEQ Class “C” Water and Wastewater license, certification in trenching / shoring and confined entry space techniques, and polyethylene fusion welding certification upon hire. Natural Gas “Operator Qualified” qualification and an industry certified welder’s license within one year of hire. Completion of OSU FM Leadership Development Program upon hire or within 24 months. Will require general understanding of utilities metering principles and experience in operating heavy equipment. Comprehensive understanding of OSU Utilities Distribution system routing and components and general knowledge of OSU Utilities Distribution systems key valve locations upon hire or within 6 months of hire and be qualified in Utilities Distribution systems maintenance as verified by the OSU Utilities Distribution training record or a previous employer.

Post-secondary education may be substituted for experience; preference is given to post-secondary education in plumbing or another utilities field.

This position is part of a Career Development Plan. Candidate position placement within the plan is dependent upon years of experience.

These license / certifications must be maintained throughout employment.

Have before hire and maintain after hire, a valid driver’s license. A valid driver’s license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned.

Ability to become proficient in the use of “AiM”Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use ofmobile technology.

Must work safely and promote a safe environment.

Preferred Qualifications :

Two years post-secondary education in the building trades or technical field and two years of successful work experience in utilities distribution systems construction and / or maintenance; or HS / GED and four years of successful work experience in utilities distribution systems construction and / or maintenance at a university or in a commercial or public utilities distribution organization.
