Position Overview Several positions available during SP25, SU25, FA25.
The Student Data Entry and Processing Assistant positions will collaborate with a Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) scientist to support the U.S. Geological Survey STATEMAP Program and other KGS-funded projects in generating Excel databases, creating GIS maps, collecting stratigraphic data, and preparing rock samples. These positions offer hands-on experience in geological research, Kansas rock data management, and oil and gas well and core data. Training and mentorship will be provided.
Per the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels . However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt / salaried or non-exempt / hourly)Job Description45% - Compile and organize Kansas rock data in Excel databases. Correct typographical errors and other relevant information (e.g., datums / elevations). Use Excel databases to create structural maps in GIS.
45% - Measure and examine rocks in cores. Sample preparation includes making powders from rocks for laboratory analysis and cutting rock slabs for petrographic thin sections.
10% - Search for relevant data in published papers, maps, reports and KGS website databases and libraries. Interact with KGS scientists and library personnel to find or request needed information.Required Qualifications
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must : 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA / GTA / GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)
- Completed coursework in geology or a related discipline.
- Basic experience with Excel software.
- Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with data entry, GIS mapping, or rock sampling tasks.
