Mechanical Repair Technician
Project Overview:
Focuses on a major postal redesign initiative to modernize and consolidate USPS operations. The goal is to reduce the number of distribution plants from 275 to 70, improving efficiency by installing larger-scale package sorters. The work takes place at the USPS Central Repair Facility in Kansas City (due to space constraints in Topeka), where technicians tear down machines to their frames, rebuild them, and install new sorting systems.
Must Haves:
· High school graduate or equivalent
· Formal mechanical training from an accredited program, equivalent military training, or a minimum of two years verifiable work history experience in mechanical and/or electromechanical repairs (in lieu of education)
· Strong mechanical aptitude with the knowledge and ability to perform repairs on simple to medium complexity electromechanical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic items
· Ability to perform basic troubleshooting
· Ability to read both electrical and mechanical wiring diagrams, schematics, and blueprints
· Ability to obtain USPS Public Trust clearance (5 years continuous residency in the US, pass federal background check)
Nice to Have:
· Experience with USPS systems or similar repair facilities
· Familiarity with press brakes, drills, power tools
· Prior work in a high-touch environment (putting things back together, installing on machines)
· Background in civilian mechanical repair, generator mechanic, or aircraft maintenance
Day to Day:
· Perform repairs and testing on simple to medium complexity mechanical equipment, including electromechanical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic items
· Putting things back together and installing components on machines
· Overhaul machines at the mail processing center
