MUST BE ABLE TO PERFORM ENDOSCOPIC VEIN HARVEST - 12 weeks / 40 hrs / wk / 8 hr shifts / 0700-1530 with 2-3 weekday calls and every 4th weekend.
Job Summary : Cardiovascular OR
Serve as first assistant to Vascular Surgeon(s) during surgery. Ensure the availability and functioning of surgical equipment used in surgical procedures. Transport patient to and from operating room, preps patient prior to surgery, serves as first or second assistant to the surgeon during the surgical procedure.
Other : Ability to work under stressful conditions and / or irregular working hours.
Contacts : Surgical team including surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, scrub techs and perfusionists. Some interaction with other health care providers. Minimal verbal interaction with patient and families.
Work Demands / Environment :
Operating room environment. Frequent and prolonged standing. Frequent walking, bending, crouching, stooping. Frequent lifting / moving patients. Intermittent lifting, moving or carrying up to 50 lbs. Frequent pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs. Frequent use of finger / hand dexterity. Constant reaching with hands / arms. Frequent talking or hearing. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range. Exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue. Possible exposure to infectious materials, communicable diseases and / or other conditions common to a healthcare environment. Exposure to risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Moderate noise level in work area. Requires work under stressful conditions, deadlines, or irregular hours. May be required to take call and / or work weekends / holidays based on the needs of the department.
1. Harvest saphenous vein for performance of CABG at the direction of the primary surgeon and assist with the placement of extracorporeal circulation. Duties also include placing sutures, operating staplers, opening and closing incisions, applying dressings, positioning and prepping the patient, aspirating and sponging fluids, wound and organ retention, and any other activity as directed by the surgeon 40%
2. Ensure the operating room has all the equipment required for specific procedure and obtains x-rays and medical records for the physician's review. Ensure the work environment is free of unsafe conditions, clutter and practices. Evaluates work conditions to ensure safe practices, infection control policies and procedures and life and fire safety programs are met. 15%
3. Transport patient to the operating room with the assistance of the circulating nurse or the anesthesiologist. Perform surgical preps including draping patient as appropriate for surgical procedure. 15%
4. Assure all patient charges are tracked and accounted for properly. 10%
5. Maintain service records and reports for administrative and regulatory purposes and monitor inventory levels and supply usage to ensure efficient and cost effective utilization of resources. 10%
6. Anticipates / plans for regulatory changes and space needs affecting the service. Identifies need for program expansion and development to improve services to customers (patients, physicians and community. 10%

Skills
Knowledge / Skills : Extensive knowledge of the clinical aspects of surgery. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Skilled in preparing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and co-workers. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Knowledgeable in basic patient care. Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures to administer patient care. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of care to provide on-going patient care. Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions. Skill in preparing and maintaining records and writing reports. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, hospital, medical staff and the public. Ability to analyze situations and apply critical thinking. Ability to communicate clearly. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Experience : Clinical experience as a surgical assistant preferred
Licensure / Certification : Certified surgical assistant, certified surgical technologist and clinical licensures as appropriate with the above Education. Holds current certification by the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist as a first assistant or the National Surgical Assistant Association on the Certification of Surgical Assistants or any entity approved by the National Association of Surgical Technologists (AST). Surgical Technologist must also hold a Surgical Technologist certification. Current certification American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Card.

Education
Minimum Qualifications :
Must meet one of the following Education and Experience qualifications :
1. Surgical Technologist with three years of experience as a Surgical Technologist and certification as a Surgical First Assist and a Surgical Technologist, or
2. High School Education / GED with completion of Surgical First Assist Program and five years of Surgical First Assistant experience and certification as a Surgical First Assist. "
