Network / Systems Engineer
Reports to VP Operations
Responsibilities to include :
Network installation and configuration : Setting up and configuring network devices like routers, switches, firewalls, and access points.
Network maintenance : Performing routine checks on network performance, identifying and resolving network issues, and applying software updates.
Network security : Implementing and managing network security measures to protect against unauthorized access and cyber threats.
User account management : Creating and managing user accounts and permissions on the network.
Performance monitoring : Utilizing network monitoring tools to identify bottlenecks and optimize network performance.
Troubleshooting : Diagnosing and resolving network connectivity issues for users.
Backup and disaster recovery : Implementing data backup strategies and disaster recovery plans
Documentation : Maintaining detailed documentation of network configuration and procedures.
Vendor management : Coordinating with network hardware and software vendors for support and upgrades.
After-Hours / On-Call availability : Managing / resolving IT related issues and events after-hours, weekends and holidays (as needed) to ensure proper operations.
More specifically, a person in the position will be :
Providing technical support for both hardware and software issues faced by our users and customers.
Monitoring the multi-site environment daily and responding immediately to any security or usability concerns, including firewalls and VPNs.
Creating and verifying backups of data.
Responding and resolving help desk requests, both internal and external.
Upgrading systems and processes as required for enhanced functionality and issue resolution.
Administering infrastructure, including hypervisors (VMWare & ProxMox), network monitoring and management software, firewalls, databases, antivirus / malware protection software and other processes.
Administering Windows, IBM i (limited) and occasional Linux domains and systems.
Managing Windows GPO and scripting for network / user operations.
Working with POE devices (Phone, WiFi, and Switches).
Managing internal and external DNS.
Managing and configuring UPSes and generators.
Managing camera and building access systems.
Performing environment replication and disaster recovery operations.
Planning, coordinating, and implementing updates, upgrades and maintenance in order to protect data, software, and hardware.
Performing routine network startup and shutdown procedures.
Recommending changes to improve systems and network configurations, and determining hardware or software requirements related to such changes.
Researching and planning application upgrades, documenting vendor changes and contract modifications in addition to reviewing contracts and identifying opportunities for cost savings by scaling resources to meet current needs.
Maintaining / updating network documentation (i.e. runbooks) and change management.
Required Skills / Capabilities :
Technical knowledge : In-depth understanding of networking protocols (TCP / IP, UDP, DNS), network topologies, and network security principles.
Hardware expertise : Familiarity with network hardware like routers, switches, firewalls, and cabling systems.
Operating system proficiency : Knowledge of different operating systems like Windows Server, IBM i, and Linux.
Troubleshooting skills : Focused on determining hardware vs. software, hardware vs. firmware, software vs. operating system, network vs. application / systems, and patterned vs. non-repeatable problems.
Analytical skills : Ability to analyze network performance data to identify potential problems working in a team, or independently without supervision.
Communication skills : Effective communication, written and verbal, with both technical and non-technical users to explain network issues and solutions.
Ability to work longer hours in infrastructure emergencies and to meet deadlines.
Ability to prioritize and multitask from multiple inputs.
Willingness to learn new technologies and maintain industry knowledge.
Ability to lift, carry, and move all components of PC workstations, servers, UPSes, network equipment, peripherals, and other ancillary equipment.
Experience / Certifications / Education Required for this position (preference given for actual experience vs certifications and degrees) :
3-5 Years of demonstrable network management, in a multi-vendor, multi-site environment.
and / or
Current CompTIA Network , Server or equivalent (i.e. Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Microsoft Certified Network Associate (MCNA), etc.).
