About The Role
As an Optical Engineer on this program, you will play a vital role in the development and testing of advanced laser communication systems. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists to design, build, and test free-space and fiber-optic systems for space-flight applications.
This position is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute assembly and test procedures for free-space and fiber-optic systems intended for space applications.
- Define optical performance and tolerance requirements.
- Support the installation and testing of optical components, assemblies, and payload systems using thermal chambers, vacuum chambers, and shock and vibration stages.
- Build and align free-space optics assemblies and testbeds (lenses, mirrors, beam splitters, etc.).
- Perform fiber-optic assembly, including high-reliability fusion splicing processes for specialty fiber types.
- B.S. degree in Optical or Electrical Engineering or Physics.
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment working on complex systems with interdisciplinary engineering teams.
- Hands-on experience handling and aligning free-space optical components (lenses, mirrors, etc.).
- Experience operating lasers and optical metrology equipment.
- Solid understanding of fundamental optical concepts (PSF, MTF, resolution, etc.).
- Experience performing measurements using optical and electrical test equipment.
- Prior experience working in cleanroom environments and/or with flight hardware.
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Master’s degree.
- 2 years of professional experience in a related field.
- Knowledge of optical communications modulation and demodulation schemes.
- Experience with System Tolerance and Performance (STOP) analysis.
- Data analysis or software development skills in LabVIEW, C , Java, Matlab, or Python.
- Experience with stray light analysis.
