Position Title: 24-Hour Homeless Shelter Staff Member
Department: Shelter Services
Reports To: Shelter Manager / Shelter Supervisor
Job Summary:
The 24-Hour Homeless Shelter Staff Member provides essential services and care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. This role involves ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for shelter residents, assisting with basic needs, and providing emotional support and guidance. Staff members work collaboratively with other team members and community partners to address the needs of shelter residents.
Key Responsibilities:
- Client Support:
- Greet clients upon entry, conduct intake assessments, and assist with creating personal profiles.
- Provide emotional support and de-escalation techniques as necessary.
- Address basic needs, including food, clothing, hygiene items, and access to emergency services.
- Assist with referral processes to mental health, substance abuse, or other support services.
- Shelter Operations:
- Ensure the shelter is clean, safe, and well-maintained at all times.
- Monitor the shelter environment and enforce shelter rules and policies.
- Respond to emergency situations in accordance with safety protocols.
- Coordinate with maintenance or facility teams for repair or cleaning needs.
- Safety and Security:
- Ensure the safety of all residents, staff, and visitors.
- Conduct regular checks of the shelter premises and equipment for safety compliance.
- Monitor access to the shelter and maintain a secure environment.
- Address and report any incidents, disturbances, or conflicts in a timely manner.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work with other shelter staff, volunteers, and outside service providers to meet clients' needs.
- Communicate with residents to inform them of shelter policies, schedules, and available services.
- Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and professional development.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; some college or relevant training preferred.
- Experience in social services, human services, or a related field preferred.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
- Ability to handle stressful situations and provide trauma-informed care.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and individuals facing challenges.
- Basic knowledge of community resources for homeless services, mental health, and substance abuse is a plus.
Desired Skills:
- First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Knowledge of crisis intervention and conflict resolution techniques.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods.
- Capable of lifting up to 25 pounds as necessary.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including monitoring shelter areas.
Work Environment:
- 24-hour shelter facility, requiring flexible shifts (day, evening, night shifts).
- May include occasional weekend and holiday shifts.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: From $15.00 per hour
Expected hours: 35 per week
