Assistant Superintendent - Applications

Interlachen Country Club is seeking an Assistant Superintendent - Applications, to lead our Golf Course and Grounds Team. The Assistant Superintendent-Applications (ASA), under the supervision of the course superintendent or Director of Golf Course and Grounds, performs chemical applications on golf course properties; fertilizes tees, greens, and fairways; and applies chemicals on areas of the golf course, including but not limited to, greens, tees and fairways. The ASA uses the Velocity program to read, understand, and keep up with chemical labels and safety data sheets (SDS). This position is also responsible for compiling preliminary pesticide usage reports for the golf course superintendent and maintaining the Greenkeeper Application. Our goal for the ASA is to master applications and expand their skill set in other areas necessary for career growth, including personnel management, irrigation, and team leadership.

The ASA reports to the Director of Golf Course and Grounds (DOGCG) and the Golf Course Superintendent. The ASA will periodically serve as the weekend lead throughout the season and be responsible for the course conditioning during those times.

Responsibilities and Expectations

Leadership and Teamwork

  • Live our values and foster a positive work environment.
  • Assist in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees, and fairways; schedule work; and supervise the employees and the use of the equipment.
  • Recruit, train, and develop seasonal golf course maintenance team members to meet and exceed standard operating procedures for tasks on the course.
  • Be a golfer / student of the game with a sound understanding of ideal playing conditions.

Golf Course and Grounds Operations

  • Ensure applicators are completing the mixing, loading, and applications of pesticides in a manner consistent with labeling. After the application, the ASA will ensure applicators are cleaning equipment and completing the necessary paperwork.
  • Maintain chemical storage and mixing areas in compliance with county, state, and federal regulations, and is responsible for the safety and direction of chemical handlers and / or helpers.
  • Become proficient with Toro Geolink Sprayers with autosteer and sprayer-to-sprayer communication and collaborate with Toro engineers / mechanics to optimize sprayer applications.
  • Have awareness of chemical inventory and maintain all PPE levels for applications.
  • Clean, test, properly calibrate, and prepare all spray application equipment.
  • Instruct equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment; supervise pesticide applications and / or operate and calibrate pesticide application equipment; and supervise and participate in the operation and maintenance of pumps and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
  • Maintains SDS database for products applied in the department utilizing the Velocity SDS management platform.
  • Qualifications and Attributes

    Education and Experience

  • A two or four-year degree or certificate in turf management
  • Knowledge of the safe mechanical operation and calibration of the following types of equipment :
  • Mechanically pressurized spray equipment

  • Hand-operated spray equipment
  • Hand-operated rotary spreaders
  • Hand-operated drop spreaders
  • Utility tractors
  • A valid driver's license
  • Current state certification and necessary licensing to apply pesticides
  • Proficiency in computer use, knowledge of Microsoft Office and related applications

  • Works an average of 45 hours per week in season, no more than 40 hours per week in the offseason.
  • Available for additional scheduling for rotating weekends, special events / tournaments, and evening / weekend snow removal activities.
  • Ability to move heavy objects, a minimum of 75 lbs.
