- This role is primarily traditional workdays (Monday through Friday, less holidays), 6:30 AM to 4:30 PM; however depending on projects and other situations, employee must be prepared to occasionally work other schedules as necessary to complete their tasks; employee is on-call 24x7 to support the plant in the event of a serious environmental concern or similar

The Environmental Manager's focus is to ensure effective management of environmental systems while maintaining a safe workplace and compliance with applicable health, safety and environmental regulations in a multi-shift, 24/7 operation. The facility is a Title V operation. This role also enjoys a strong relationship to division/corporate environmental leaders.

Plant Overview
- The Phenix City, AL. facility is a 24/7 operation; we are a manufacturer of a number of mineral wool insulation products including industrial boards of various densities, batts for use in commercial building applications and a wide range of pipe insulation.
Your Day to Day:
- The following duties and responsibilities are presented as broad expectations for this role; understanding the major focus area within each are the environmental aspects:
- Provides accurate, cost effective and timely technical and regulatory compliance support to plant
- Provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice; represents the company with state and federal agencies as required:
- ADEM (Air Permits, Solid and Hazardous Waste Management)
- Health Department (Radioactive Device License; Inspections Recordkeeping)
- Local City (Wastewater Discharge Permits)
- EPA (SPCC, SWPPP, GHG, TRI Programs, EPCRA)
- Receive, review and reply to communications from government agencies pertaining to permits and Environmental Programs
- Establishes and maintain programs to ensure that operating permits are in order for all sources of air emissions:
- Monitor the NESHAP Monitoring System for alarms (Daily)
- Interpret alarms to determine potential air permit deviations
- Report plant management on any air permit deviations
- Perform root cause analysis on each deviation reported
- Maintain and update OMM and SSMP plans as per air permit requirements
- Write and/or review procedures for employees to follow the Environmental Program requirements
- Ensures our communities and employees are aware of the potential hazards created by plant operations
- Maintains current knowledge of specific requirements imposed by government agencies
- Qualifies all personnel involved in water sampling and testing
- Maintaining environmental abatement equipment
- Emergency response
- Handling of hazardous materials and waste
- Ensures process waters are properly managed to protect ground waters and surface tributaries from contamination:
- Perform weekly and monthly inspections under the SWPPP
- Report and follow up with management on recommendations to correct any observations found in nonconformance with SWPPP
- Ensure the proper disposal of hazardous waste and lead a plant-wide effort to eliminate solid waste by reducing process waters, reusing, and recycling various materials:
- Perform weekly inspection and inventories on universal and hazardous waste
- Manage disposal of universal and hazardous waste
- Manage waste streams and maintain waste profile and records on all waste generated
- Coordinates site/plant-wide environmental audits and analyze results, complete action items
- Establishes and implements plant-wide communications pertaining to environmental compliance to ensure employees are aware of potential hazards and unsafe conditions
- Develops and conducts employee training
- Emergency preparedness
- Develops reviews and revises written regulatory compliance programs
- Monitors and prevents chemical, physical and biological hazards and diseases that could present in the work area
- Complete monthly reports to plant and Corporate Environmental Management
- Support/drive productivity improvements
- Monitors budgetary requirements
- Root Cause assessment and Corrective Action Plans (specific to environmental concerns)
- Industrial Hygiene across the campus – primary operations as well as a nearby offsite warehouse
- Ensure all process additions and changes comply with all Phenix City and JM environmental standards
- Establish the Annual Operating Plan for the Environmental Team
- Demonstrate exceptional leadership in all responsibilities
- Ensure the safety of self and others by complying with all policies, procedures and licenses
- Actively participate on the Plant's Safety Committee
- Fulfill duties defined in the Plant's Emergency Response Plan
- Support and promote safe practices and environmental commitments in alignment with company commitments, policies, and compliance requirements
- Foster regular two-way conversations in a flat organizational structure to maximize employee engagement and ensure appropriate focus
- Diagnose and solve complex problems
- Participates actively in all daily management standing meetings and other staff level meetings
- Complete all duties as assigned with a high degree of dedication to safety and environmental stewardship
- Performs other related duties as assigned; work and partner with Plant Leadership team to achieve business goals
- This role is expected to cross train with the Health & Safety Manager in order to provide support and backup for one another
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering or related field with a minimum of 5 years' experience in environmental programs, regulatory, and manufacturing
- Thorough knowledge of Local/State/Government rules/regulations i.e.: Environmental (40 CFR)
- Thorough knowledge of Transportation of Hazardous Waste (49 CFR)
- Leadership skills to direct personnel and processes within regulatory standards
- Experience in hazard awareness and risk assessment
- Knowledge of regulatory standards and ability to work with respective outside agencies
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work well with upper level management as well as production workforce
- Must have the ability to work with and influence a multi-discipline team and management with a demonstrated capability to implement plans and follow through with sustained execution, meeting project milestones in a timely manner
- Demonstrated capabilities in working collaboratively with internal and external resources
