Position Overview
As the commercial vehicle industry undertakes its most significant transformation in a century, International is on a mission to redefine transportation.
The Director of Government Relations is responsible for developing and executing the organization's government affairs strategy to support its mission, goals, and policy priorities.
This role requires strong advocacy, legislative analysis, and relationship-building skills to effectively engage with government officials, policymakers, and key stakeholders at the local, state, and federal levels.
The Director will lead a team in monitoring legislative and regulatory developments, crafting policy positions, and influencing decision-making processes.
This role is ideal for a self motivated, strategic and results-driven professional with deep policy expertise, exceptional advocacy skills, and the ability to lead a government relations team effectively.
The position can be based in Washington D.C. or at our corporate headquarters in Lisle, Illinois.
Responsibilities
Government Relations Strategy
Develop and implement a comprehensive government relations strategy that aligns with the company's objectives.
Identify legislative and regulatory opportunities and challenges that may impact the company.
Provide strategic guidance to senior leadership on government relations and policy matters.
Policy Analysis and Advocacy
Monitor, analyze, and assess legislative and regulatory proposals at all government levels.
Communicate complex policy issues to leadership, stakeholders, and external audiences.
Advocate for favorable policies and regulatory decisions that support the organization’s mission.
Legislative Outreach and Lobbying
Build and maintain strong relationships with legislators, government officials, and regulatory agencies.
Represent the organization at hearings, meetings, and policy discussions to influence legislative and regulatory outcomes.
Engage in direct lobbying efforts, drafting policy recommendations, and coordinating advocacy initiatives.
Coalition and Stakeholder Engagement
Establish and strengthen alliances with industry associations, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders.
Collaborate with external partners to advance shared policy objectives and advocacy efforts.
Serve as the primary liaison between the organization and government entities, ensuring strong communication and collaboration.
Compliance and Reporting
Ensure compliance with all lobbying disclosure requirements, ethics regulations, and reporting obligations.
Prepare and submit required reports on government affairs activities.
Maintain records of advocacy efforts, legislative interactions, and policy developments.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree
At least 14 years of government relations experience, including 6 years of management experience
Master's degree
At least 12 years of government relations experience, including 6 years of management experience

Additional Requirements
Desired Skills
JD or master’s degree preferred.
Management experience, leading government affairs teams or initiatives.
Strong knowledge of the legislative and regulatory process at the local, state, and federal levels.
Proven ability to analyze and communicate complex policy matters clearly and persuasively.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with government officials and industry stakeholders.
Excellent strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience in public speaking and advocacy.
