About The Position
We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Space Communications Group Lead to oversee the development, integration, and operational excellence of our space communications team and systems. The successful candidate will be a key player in managing our advanced communications infrastructure, which includes satellite systems, ground stations, and relay technologies. This role requires a deep understanding of satellite communications, ground station operations, and data relay systems, as well as the ability to lead and inspire a multidisciplinary team. The space communications team area of responsibility includes the end-to-end flow of information from source to destination including communication and networking applications and protocols, link layer framing and error coding, cryptography, modulation, RF transmission, space link propagation and space effects, RF reception, demodulation and data delivery – essentially the entire process of moving information through space. This position is on-site at our Houston Lunar Production and Operations Facility.

Responsibilities
- Provide expert guidance on the design, implementation, and optimization of our space communications systems, including satellite networks, ground stations, and data relay technologies. Ensure all systems meet the technical and operational requirements for cislunar space missions.
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers, scientists, and technical professionals. Foster a collaborative environment that promotes innovation, efficiency, and professional growth.
- Oversee the integration of various components of the Lunar Data Network, including Nova Control, base-band units, data and network protocols, and lunar data relay satellites. Ensure seamless interoperability and functionality across the entire communications infrastructure.
- Manage the technical aspects of ongoing projects, from initial planning through deployment and operational support. Ensure projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and to the highest technical standards.
- Contribute to the strategic vision for the Data Services and Lunar Access business units, identifying opportunities for technological advancement and market expansion. Develop and implement strategies to address emerging challenges and opportunities in space communications.
- Establish and monitor performance metrics for communication systems, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and security. Implement improvements and optimizations based on performance data and feedback.
- Provide technical support to the project managers on planning, contractual changes and risk & opportunities identification.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field. Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) preferred.
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in space communications, with a strong background in satellite systems, ground station systems, space communication link and networ operations, and data relay technologies. Demonstrated experience leading complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
- Extensive knowledge of satellite communications systems, ground station operations, and data relay infrastructure. Familiarity with technologies and practices relevant to cislunar space missions is highly desirable.
- Proven ability to lead and manage technical teams, drive project success, and foster a culture of innovation and excellence. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
- Experience with project management methodologies and tools. PMP or similar certification is preferred.
