Ionia County is looking for an organized, hardworking, self-starter to oversee a janitorial staff of three and be a part of the cleaning team. Under the supervision of the Facilities Manager, the Janitorial Supervisor is responsible for staff supervision, general operations and activities of janitorial services, and supply inventory for the County’s facilities. This is a full-time, 3rd shift position with hours from 11:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.
Wage/Salary: Grade 10 $23.21 - $28.41 per hours based on qualifications and experience.

Purpose of Position
Under the supervision of the Facilities Manager, the Janitorial Supervisor is a working position (supervision and janitorial work), responsible for the janitorial staff and the cleaning of all county buildings. Responsible for staff training, general janitorial operations and activities of janitorial services, security, efficiency, maintaining inventory and equipment. Performs all related essential duties as required. This position is 3rd shift from 11:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Supervises, trains, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals; assists with complex or problem situations; provides direction, advice, and technical expertise; interviews and hires new employees in coordination with the Facilities Manager.
- Coordinates and participates with the janitorial team in the cleaning and department work activities; organizes and prioritizes department workload; reviews work assignments; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work; troubleshoots problem situations.
- Reports maintenance issues to the Facilities Maintenance Department.
- Ensures departmental compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
- Ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
- Ensures that employee time is recorded accurately and if applicable, prepares reports for payroll purposes.
- Ensures proper inventory of janitorial equipment in County buildings in all departments.
- Ensure files and filing systems are maintained
- Performs other related essential duties as required.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- High School Diploma or GED
- A minimum of 2 years of related experience in janitorial services
- 1 year minimum of supervisory/ team training experience
Special Requirements
- A valid driver’s license required
Minimum Physical and Mental Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Physical Requirements
- Ability to operate a variety of departmental equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor cleaning and refinishing equipment, the ability to use cleaning supplies and chemicals safely and correctly.
- Ability to exert physical effort in moderate lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling; ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; ability to climb and balance; tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Ability to assign, review, plan and coordinate the work of employees.
- Ability to evaluate employee job performance.
- Ability to provide instruction and training in employee assigned tasks and respond to employee problems.
- Ability to discipline or discharge of an employee in conjunction with the Facilities Manager.
- Ability to recommend the selection of a new-hire in conjunction with the Facilities Manager.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication
- Ability to comprehend and correctly use a variety of informational documents including billing invoices, attendance records, architectural drawings, electrical diagrams, job applications, budgets, insurance documents, and other reports and records.
- Ability to comprehend a variety of reference books and manuals including equipment manuals, policy manual, and others.
- Ability to prepare schedules, memorandum, correspondence, and other job-related documents.
