In addition, the internship program allows students to grow both professionally and personally through interactions with research and business professionals in support of projects aligned with department initiatives. Students will learn and work under a practicing professional who will provide guidance and mentorship.
Medicinal Chemistry
Summary:
A critical challenge in the successful development of siRNA-based therapeutics is enhancing their in vivo metabolic stability. We are seeking a summer intern to participate in the multi-step solution-phase synthesis of modified nucleosides and their characterization using analytical techniques such as NMR, LCMS, and HPLC. The intern will incorporate these nucleoside building blocks into siRNA sequences using automated solid-phase oligonucleotide synthesis. These modified siRNAs will be evaluated collaboratively for potency and duration of action in both cell cultures and mouse models. Additionally, biochemical assays will be conducted to assess the impact of these modifications on RISC loading and release mechanisms.

Requirements:
- MUST be currently enrolled in a U.S. Undergraduate Program and not graduating prior to the completion of the Ionis internship.
- MUST be able to begin internship between 6/9 and 6/16/2025
- MUST be able and willing to remain in the program through at least 8/15/2025
- MUST be able and willing to commit to a minimum 40-hour workweek and work onsite in Carlsbad, CA.
