In addition, the internship program allows students to grow both professionally and personally through interactions with research and business professionals in support of projects aligned with department initiatives. Students will learn and work under a practicing professional who will provide guidance and mentorship.
Neuromuscular Research
Summary
Efficient delivery of ASOs to skeletal muscle is a key factor in the treatment of muscle diseases. In this context, we are seeking a summer intern who will participate in evaluating mechanistic aspects, efficacy, and distribution of ASOs in skeletal muscle. The prospective intern will learn rodent handling techniques, drug administration, rodent tissue dissection, RNA isolation, RT-qPCR, digital PCR, and Western blotting. Through the project, the student will gain basic understanding of ASO and skeletal muscle biology. Findings from this project will further our understanding of ASO technology in skeletal muscle, in hopes of helping patients affected by severe myopathies.
Program Highlights
The pay scale for this position is $18 to $23 per hour.

- MUST be currently enrolled in a U.S. Undergraduate Program and not graduating prior to the completion of the Ionis internship.
- MUST be able to begin internship between 6/9 and 6/16/2025
- MUST be able and willing to remain in the program through at least 8/15/2025
- MUST be able and willing to commit to a minimum 40-hour workweek and work onsite in Carlsbad, CA.
- Housing and travel assistance not provided for—local applicants with suitable transportation are preferred
