Description Summary
The Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for overseeing the health and well-being of student-athletes, ensuring proper injury prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. They manage all aspects of athletic training, including pre-participation screenings, emergency care at events, and the development of injury prevention programs. The role also involves coordinating with medical professionals, maintaining detailed health records, and managing referrals for specialized care. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the Head Athletic Trainer leads and supervises a team of athletic trainers, provides educational workshops for athletes and staff, and ensures compliance with NJCAA and institutional regulations. They are responsible for budget management, developing policies and emergency protocols, and supporting the mental and physical wellness of athletes. Effective leadership, strong organizational skills, and up-to-date knowledge of sports medicine practices are essential for success in this role.
Examples of Duties

- Provide athlete training coverage at all home events, including evenings / weekends.
- Communicate with coaches and Intercollegiate Athletic Director on risk and liability concerns
- Maintain documentation of injuries, rehabilitations, treatments and HIPPA compliant medical files
- Provide first-aid.
- Lead and evaluate all athletic training staff.
- Oversee all actions and job duties of the athletic training staff.
- Maintain national certification standards by meeting continuing education requirements set by NATA.
- Attend routine meetings for athletic training coverage for events.
- Ensure medical paperwork is completed prior to participation by athletes and coaches
- Conduct morning treatments / rehab if necessary by appointment to meet the needs of student-athletes
- Advise coaches on playing conditions related to weather conditions (heat index, lightening).

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
A Bachelor's or Master's degree is required dependent on graduation date, along with successful completion of the NATA certification exam. Iowa Licensure must be obtained before the start date. A minimum of 3 years of experience as a Head Athletic Trainer or equivalent is preferred, and candidates should have a solid understanding of NJCAA and ICCAC regulations.
