Iowa Orthopedic Center is actively seeking a Financial Counselor to join our team. In this role you will support patients by explaining financial obligations, providing payment options, and facilitating insurance and payment plans. This role ensure the timely collection of patient accounts by communicating with patients, insurance companies and other stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receive and process incoming calls regarding self-pay and liability accounts as well as collection accounts
- Outgoing pre-collect calls to scheduled surgery patients for review of patient financial responsibility based on the estimated codes and charges for the scheduled event and patient education on this if needed
- Coordinate with coder and nurse on estimated procedure and procedure charge
- Investigate refund requests
- Verify accuracy and detail of bankruptcy notices including adjustment of any charges under the bankruptcy time frame
- Obtain surgery fee quotes and collect fees in advance for self-pay surgeries
- Contact patients regarding delinquent accounts and arrange mutually acceptable payment schedules
- Compile delinquent accounts and forward to collection agency
- Work closely with several departments to ensure correct account information as well as relaying correct and helpful information to the patient or their guardian
- Provide timely and accurate information to front desk, surgery, and outpatient testing departments to ensure timely scheduling and treatment of patients
- Prepare charge estimate for scheduled events on self-pay patient accounts
- Close out patient accounts of deceased patients
Requirements
The ideal candidate for this role has:
- High school diploma or GED
- Prior experience with collections and the ability to handle collections professionally and empathetically
- Medical insurance background, preferred
- Medical terminology or coding terminology knowledge, preferred
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience/knowledge of state and federal collection laws
- Prior experience with payer remittance and balancing a patient account
- Basic computer skills; Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, etc.)
