Description
The High School Driver’s Education Classroom and Behind-the-Wheel Instructor will provide a rigorous academic environment that actively engages students; incorporate best educational practices, creates an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and address the needs of all learners and supports social/emotional development of the students. Must have knowledge and understanding of current driving laws and be able to follow philosophy and curriculum guidelines.
Job Duties
- Teach Students the basic controls of a vehicle, including starting, stopping, turning and parking. Train students on defensive driving techniques and how to respond to various road conditions
- Instruct students on proper land use, merging, and passing other vehicles safely
- Demonstrate and supervise compliance with traffic laws and signals
- Evaluate the student's driving abilities and identify areas for improvement
- Provide constructive feedback to help students build skills and confidence
- Document student progress and maintain accurate training records
- Prepare students for their driving exams by simulating test scenarios
- Monitor and maintain a safe learning environment during driving sessions
- Take control of the vehicle when necessary to prevent accidents
- Educate students on the importance of using seat belts, observing speed limits, and avoiding distractions

- Communication with Parents and Students
Qualifications
- Candidate must possess a safe driving record for the last two years, be at least 25 years old, have a valid driver’s license, and be able to pass a background check.
Additional Qualifications
Candidate will be guided through the remaining qualifications which are:
- Completion of the online “behind the wheel” coursework
- Receive a certificate of completion with the Iowa Department of Transportation
- Completion of the 5-12 Driver and Safety Education Endorsement through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners
Physical Demands
This position demands the ability to sit in a car for long periods of time. The ability to get in and out of an automobile and properly use the instructor brake. Occasionally lift ten pounds, operate a computer and classroom equipment. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, use a phone. A high degree of interaction skills, reasoning/analysis, and the ability to effectively communicate with parents and students via multiple platforms is required. Organization and a high level of responsibility is required.
