Program Summary
The Pre-Employment Training (PET) program, in collaboration with the Refugee Employment Services (RES) program serving new arrivals, provides both remote and in-person English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for six skill levels. PET also offers vocational training, digital literacy skill-building and resource navigation, computer lab access, and connections to local community resources and higher education. PET currently operates at IRCO sites in Portland and Beaverton.
Position Summary
The ESL Instructor 1 provides ESL classroom instruction to adult language learners with a focus on work readiness. The ESL Instructor 1 uses IRCO curriculum to prepare lessons and materials, deliver content that centers adult participants' needs, meet learning outcome targets, and align with best practices in the ESL field. Courses are offered for 6 proficiency levels and include literacy and numeracy, everyday "survival" English, grammar, conversation, reading, writing, listening, culturally relevant work readiness and employability, and computer skills content. The ESL Instructor 1 will join the Pre-Employment Training team of instructors as part of IRCO's Refugee Employment Services programming within the Workforce and Refugee Services Division.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide in-person and / or remote ESL classroom instruction
- Responsible for delivering and providing feedback on curricula
- Utilize curricula to deliver lessons incorporating culturally appropriate content and language to prepare participants for the workforce
- Adjust the classroom setting and lessons for a variety of learning styles and abilities
- Provide instruction in basic computer and / or digital literacy skills, as well as teaching Microsoft Word
- Conduct assessments to measure participants' entrance level and progress
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Collaborate with IRCO program staff to ensure culturally specific content and culturally responsive instruction
- Provide connections to local resources
- Develop rapport with learners and celebrate their accomplishments
- Track participant attendance according to program policies and communicate with program staff
- Ensure compliance with program, organizational, and funder requirements and standards
- Seek professional development opportunities
