PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The sole purpose of a School Marshal is to prevent the act of murder or serious bodily injury on school premises. In the event of an active threat/attack the school marshal will protect students, staff, and visitors. School Marshals will coordinate the daily safety operations of the assigned campus.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or GED
Clear and valid Texas driver’s license
Valid Texas License to Carry Handgun
Ability to obtain L3 Psychological Clearance prior employment
Ability to obtain Texas Commission on Law Enforcement School Marshal Certification (prior to the start of the academic year)

Additional Requirements:
Must successfully pass a drug test to gain employment and will be subject to random drug testing.
Must be evaluated and certified as in satisfactory psychological and emotional health per the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Licensee Psychological and Emotional Health Declaration (L3)
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Daily assignment
1. School Marshal will work at their normal daily educational and/or school operations assignment.
2. Full-time Marshals are 187 days. Existing employees (regular contract, plus stipend, plus extra days if needed)
3. Provide safety and security to students, staff and visitors at all San Marcos CISD campuses and functions.
4. Monitor all campus safety protocols and assure that staff and students are following San Marcos CISD policy.
5. Advise the campus principal and leadership on matters regarding campus safety, security, and proactive measures to protect the well-being of all students, staff, and visitors.
6. Communicate safety concerns with campus administration & the Director of Safety while working proactively to mitigate the aforementioned.
7. Create, administer, and adjust the Campus Emergency Operations Plan for the education of the campus staff as it pertains to emergency operations.
8. Serve as the campus Standard Response Protocol (SRP) expert. Plan and conduct scenario-based drills in accordance with the Standard Response Protocol.
9. Serve as the point of contact with law enforcement and first responders.
10. Proactively monitor the interior and exterior/perimeter of the campus and take measures to confront unknown persons.
11. Persistently conduct outside security checks of playgrounds and other student & staff-occupied areas.

Maintain emotional control under distress, confront suspicious or elevated individuals, continuous walking.
Safety Sensitive Position: requires an initial drug test plus random drug testing throughout the year
Tools/Equipment Used: Employees will provide their own handgun, magazines, and retention holster (Equipment Stipend $2,500). Additionally utilized daily equipment: two-way radio, emergency management software, camera system, alarm system, AED, tourniquet, fire extinguisher, and other standard office equipment, including computers.
Posture: Prolonged walking and standing
Motion: Constant walking and climbing stairs; occasional keyboarding and use of mouse
Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (15–44 pounds)
Environment: Work inside and outside (moderate exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); moderate exposure to noise
Other: Specific hearing and visual requirements may be subject to adverse and hazardous working conditions, including violent and armed confrontations; ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. School district employees may be required to work from home and use their personal electronic devices.
