Position Summary:
Blasters use abrasive materials and blasting equipment to remove paint, grease, tar, rust and dirt. The General Laborer will support this operation by shoveling or pouring sand, grit, or other abrasive material into the machine, and monitor and maintain an adequate supply of the abrasive material in the hopper.
Primary Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Maintain the work area in a clean and orderly manner.
- Shovel or pour sand, grit, or other abrasive material into the machine, and monitor and maintain an adequate supply of the abrasive material in the hopper.
- Perform various manual tasks such as sweeping abrasive material to be recycled by the blasting system. Other tasks could be by use of brooms, shovels, breaker bars, hand tools, etc.
- Assist Blasters to clean, mask, prep and coat interior/exterior surfaces and associated areas of freight cars.
- Assist Blasters to remove any railcar parts that do not need to be blasted or painted.
- Clean, adjust and maintain equipment, using hand tools.
- Follow all safety rules and procedures.
- Interact with crew members and supervisors in a team environment.
- Comply with the established safety policies and support continuing awareness for safety
- Perform other duties as assigned
Normally Expected Education and/or Practical Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Demonstrated ability to handle outside working conditions is a plus.
- Preferred Candidates will have experience supporting blast and paint operations.
- Ability to read and comprehend basic drawings and scope of work.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
- Frequent exposure to loud noises.
- Continually required to stand, walk, bend, crouch and climb.
- Continually required to use hands and fingers and reach with arms.
- Frequently required to lift up to 75 lbs and team lift up to 150 lbs.
- Must be able to physically enter rail cars, handle confined spaces and heights.
- Use of respirator as required.
- Continually required to talk or hear.
- Occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour
