What are the responsibilities and job description for the 2025-2026 - Middle School - English Teacher position at Isidore Newman School?
Isidore Newman School seeks a passionate, dynamic Middle School English educator for the 2025-2026 academic year. Qualified applicants will hold a degree in English or a closely related field, with prior teaching experience at the middle school level preferred. Candidates must be skilled in forging strong relationships with students and families, while holding students to the traditional high academic standards characteristic of Newman's program. The successful applicant will possess excellent speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills; be technologically savvy and computer literate; have an abiding interest in helping students to experience academic and social growth; be successful in working with teams; and demonstrate cultural competency, respect for diversity of identities and experiences, and an orientation toward equity and inclusion.
Newman's student-centered approach to English focuses on the craft of writing and reading that engages students both intellectually and emotionally. This is the heart of the Newman English program; teachers embracing this philosophy will be a good fit. English teachers at Newman develop student writing skills through application and in tandem with literature studies. Given this emphasis on the development of writing skills through application, a personal passion for writing on the part of the candidate is also beneficial. English educators who demonstrate a keen ability to push adolescents toward a higher understanding of literature, both classic and contemporary, are strong applicants for this role. Newman English educators are fully invested in fostering a love of reading for pleasure among students; our teachers are expected to stay current in young adult literature and actively coach students as they choose independent reading titles.
Additional duties and roles within the Middle School, including acting as an advisor, will be elements of this position, so a desire to be an active member of the school community outside the classroom is critical as well.
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, updated resume and names of three professional references.
