Position Description:
The Louise S. McGehee School is now accepting applications for a dynamic, innovative, full-time English teacher who enthusiastically invests in all aspects of the education process and in the school-wide community. Qualified candidates will possess an undergraduate degree in English or Education; strong classroom management skills; and will have at least two years of classroom teaching experience at the middle school level, ideally in an all-girls or independent school setting. Desired teaching skills include knowledge/experience in the following areas: multiple forms of assessment, student differentiation, childhood development, workshop-centered approaches, and curriculum design. A master’s degree in education is preferred.
The candidate will primarily teach sixth-grade students and would ideally have the flexibility to teach an additional section of students in middle or upper school. This candidate will be excited to collaborate with colleagues across disciplines and to engage in constant conversation about further strengthening and evolving the English and middle school programs. Essential Functions:
- Demonstrate a passion for teaching and learning with an exceptional understanding of the middle school level and adolescent development, including age-appropriate techniques and technologies and strong classroom management skills.
- Maintain a full-time teaching schedule.
- Meet the individual needs of the students through workshop-centered, differentiated instruction and advance their learning in reading comprehension and analysis, vocabulary, independent reading, discussion, as well as analytical and creative writing.
- Create and design dynamic, sequential lesson plans, and workshop methods in line with the school’s philosophy on student-centered practices.
- Establish close relationships with students individually to nurture their writing, curiosity, positive response to feedback, and incremental goal-setting.
- Use rubrics and assessments in line with departmental expectations to assess students on a regular basis and communicate with students and parents about their progress.
- Advise a small group of middle school students each year, acting as the point person for these students and their families, leading progress report conferences, building a sense of community in the advisory group, and teaching advisory topics that support middle school girls in building a sense of agency, self-awareness, self-discipline, and citizenship.
- Fulfill assigned duties to monitor students in various capacities, as designated by schoolwide protocols.
- Clearly and effectively communicate with administration, faculty, students, and parents.
- Actively participate as a member of the middle school faculty and the greater school community.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in English or Education
- Have at least two years of classroom teaching experience, ideally in an all-girls or independent school setting.
- A master’s degree is preferred.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Regularly works in standard office or classroom conditions and climate.
- Regularly uses close and distance vision, including working at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
- Frequently required to move around the office/classroom; works at a desk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with students, fellow staff and community members.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend, to stoop, to reach, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead.
