Responsible for the planning, leading, and implementing recreational programs and experiences for children in a group setting. They will be responsible for the children’s safety, manage children’s behavior, act as role model and mentor/model constructive participation in all daily activities. Work closely with the Recreation Coordinator (direct supervisor) to ensure children’s safety and provide a high quality outdoor educational and recreational experience for participants. Receives required training on camp operations, counseling guidelines, policies, and procedures conducted by the Parks Operations Coordinator.

- Help write and implement a weekly activities schedule for assigned camp group.
- Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, songs, games, swimming, opening and closing ceremonies, etc.
- Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.
- Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter.
- Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to Park Management.
- Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports and daily attendance logs.
- Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
- Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for participant’s safety and their whereabouts at all times.
- Help guide junior counselors and camp volunteers to have a deeper understanding of leadership and counseling skills.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Must be at least fifteen years of age. Must be able to comprehend written/verbal instructions. Strong organizational and communication skills preferred. Educational classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field. Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision. Upon hire, completion of CPR, AED, and First Aid certification, as well as, attend mandatory camp staff training.
Physical Requirements:
Use of fingers, hands, see, depth perception, hearing, speaking, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, reaching, climbing, balancing and stooping. Ability to read and comprehend professional manuals, policies, procedures, instructions, memos, and letters. Ability to write compound sentences relating information, data, details to layman. Ability to perform basic mathematical functions. Ability to speak clearly and concisely; conversant in practices and procedures of discipline
Work Environment:
Inside and outside work. Exposure to inclement weather (e.g. sun, heat, humidity, cold, rain, dust. noise). Exposure to fresh and salt water.
