iSpecimen is a small public company (~100 people) on a mission to accelerate medical research. We are building a marketplace that connects medical researchers to the human biospecimens they need through a network of hundreds of hospitals and labs. We are growing our small engineering team to dramatically improve our data quality and marketplace user experience for researchers and biospecimen suppliers.

Position Overview

The Laboratory and Clinical Logistics Manager has overall responsibility for all laboratory and kitting preparation activities onsite at iSpecimen headquarters. This is an exciting opportunity to take our laboratory to the next level, which includes a laboratory move and expansion of services. The person in this role will play a significant role in strategizing for the continued growth and development of both areas. This person will report to the VP of Operations.

It is expected that this person works full time Monday through Friday at iSpecimen Headquarters, which is currently in Lexington, MA.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee operations in the laboratory and the kit preparation areas
  • Ensure that all staff have KPIs and are working toward those KPIs
  • Maintain adequate levels of staffing
  • Maintain all laboratory and kit preparation SOPs and Job Aids
  • Act as the administrator for all courier accounts, including but not limited to FedEx and World Courier
  • Handle documentation for international shipments, including obtaining permits as required
  • Continuously seek alternative solutions for better customer experience as well as cost-containment
  • Work in the lab or the kit preparation area in rotation with other staff approximately 50% of working hours
  • Incorporate automation wherever possible
  • Work collaboratively with fulfillment teams to solve workflow problems
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements including better tracking mechanisms for metrics analysis
  • Work with technology team to identify opportunities for software enhancements
  • Think creatively and come up with new, valuable approaches

Laboratory Specific Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain a safe working laboratory environment
  • Act as Chemical Hygiene Officer
  • Act as Biosafety Officer
  • Ensure that all daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual QC has been performed and filed appropriately
  • Manage the call schedule for temperature monitoring devices
  • Maintain the Laboratory Disaster Recovery Plan and test this plan at least annually
  • Manage ISP-Bio inventory including working with iSpecimen Data Team to integrate inventory into Marketplace
  • Create and maintain an organized system for storing both ISP-Bio inventory as well as ISP-Hub inventory
  • Make a continuous effort to protect any PHI that exists in the laboratory

Kit Preparation Specific Responsibilities

  • Optimize organization of inventory of biospecimen collection kits
  • Work toward standardization of kits
  • In collaboration with our Marketing team continuously improve the quality of branding of our kits
  • Maintain equipment inventory database that tracks location of iSpecimen-owned equipment, particularly equipment loaned to suppliers

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in clinical research, biorepository management, clinical lab testing, or another biospecimen-related field
  • Experience with managing people and teams
  • Bachelors Degree in medical laboratory science, biotechnology, or equivalent
  • Broad knowledge clinical pathology specimens and related tests
  • Experience with shipping and receiving biospecimens, both domestic and international
  • Strong knowledge of lab safety
  • Experience building or expanding lab spaces
  • Exceptional computer skills, including intermediate mastery of Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Great interpersonal skills. Likes working with people. Positive attitude.
  • Self-starter who likes to get things done and has an appetite for continuous learning
  • Ability to handle a fast-paced environment, think creatively and come up with new, valuable approaches
  • Proven track record of attention to detail and ability to work in a continually changing environment
  • Lead the effort to grow the lab and kit preparation space, including identifying proper spaces, planning buildout, adding new equipment, moving existing equipment and specimens, developing new processes
