Position Focus:

The lifeguard is responsible for performing a variety of duties to prepare the pool for the demands of the group present. Work is performed at a self-controlled pace but may vary depending on the demands of the job required. The lifeguard is required to participate in a 15-minute daily training session to demonstrate knowledge of ability to perform work activities. This can be verbal or physical, and can cover all aspects of any of the described essential functions. Lifeguards are required to complete at least 4 hours of in-service training per month to keep their lifeguarding skills up to date. 


Qualifications:

The lifeguard must be at least 15 years of age, must obtain a work permit if under the age of 16 years old and be certified with Jeff Ellis and Associates International Lifeguard Training Program. The Lifeguard must have or be able to successfully complete CPR, First Aid, and AED certification before the first day of work. The Lifeguard has to be able to successfully complete the Ellis in-water skills test and written examination on lifeguard skills and safety. 


Hours:

The lifeguard is responsible for performing the duties as outlined in this analysis. The lifeguard is a seasonal employee working from 4-40 hours per week. Work shifts are variable with an average of 5.0 hours per day. They may work as long as 11 hours, with breaks during this period. No overtime (over 40 hours per week) is allowed unless pre-authorized by the Aquatics Supervisor. If under the age of 16, no work shall be performed before 7:00 am and after 9:00 pm. The lifeguard is hired seasonally, which means from Memorial Day through Labor Day. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Guarding the pool using the E&A 10/20 standard of protection.

2. Performs first aid technique and rescue procedures, as necessary.

3. General maintenance of pool deck, concessions stand and locker rooms.

4. Enforce all Itasca Waterpark rules.

5. In-service and regular training.

6. Participates in rescue drills, first aid reviews, instructional clinics and other skill development activities.

7. Maintains a current lifeguard certification.

8. Attends required trainings and meetings.

9. Performs the job safely and in compliance with district policies, procedures, work and safety rules, and the employee handbook.

10. Maintains a clean and organized work environment.

11. Other duties as assigned.


Marginal Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Set up and take down of deck furniture.

2. Participate in “community activities” as described by the Aquatics Supervisor. 

3. Participate in Pool rentals and Birthday party rentals.

Requirements

Required Knowledge:

The lifeguard must be able to follow the directions from supervisor and co-workers. The lifeguard must be able to cooperate well with co-workers. The lifeguard must be safety conscientious and use good judgment at all times. Good knowledge of Park District Waterpark Rules and Regulations.


Required Competencies:

1. The lifeguard must work closely with co-workers. 

2. The lifeguard must work around the general population. 

3. The lifeguard must work under supervision and direction of supervisors. 

4. The lifeguard has responsibility for the safety of the public in the pool and on the pool deck. 

5. The lifeguard may have to work under stressful situations when first aid or CPR is required. 

6. The lifeguard has to be able to make decisions to ensure safety in and around the pool. 

7. Ability to work in a team atmosphere, promoting positive work relationships with supervisors and co-workers.

8. Ability to demonstrate leadership qualities to perform required work.

9. Capacity to be self-motivated and achieve assigned goals.

10. Ability to maintain self-control and composure in difficult situations.

11. Ability to follow directions and communicate in English verbally and in writing. 

12. Ability to read and understand materials printed in English.

13. Capacity to proactively resolve problems, if authorized to do so, or to refer problems to immediate supervisor.


Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions:

1. The lifeguard has to be able to respond quickly and accurately to emergencies. 

2. Lifeguards are also at risk of being exposed to pool chemicals. 

3. Lifeguards must have 20/30 vision without or with corrected vision.

4. Outside, the lifeguard will be exposed to the varying weather conditions, which could include cold, rain, and extreme heat.

Occasional exposure to natural and potentially extreme weather conditions while supervising employees or attending job related  activities at locations away from the office.

5. Exposure to noise distractions from employees or equipment operation in adjacent work areas.

6. Infrequent exposure to cleaning materials and office supplies.

7.  Capacity to work in a high stress environment under multiple deadlines and with frequent interruptions.

8.  Ability to work extra hours to accomplish and complete high volume of work.

9. Exposure to various chemicals (i.e., chlorine, muriatic acid, diatomaceous earth, cleaning materials and disinfectants) as used in routine aquatic maintenance.

10. Exposure to chronic infectious disease while performing routine first aid or emergency procedures.

11. Protective clothing and equipment is required as it pertains to the particular job duty:

a) Microshield and/or Sealeasy

b) Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

c) Oxygen

d) Non-Latex gloves

e) Sunscreen

f) Sunglasses and hat
