J. Berry Nursery was founded in 2006 and is growing by leaps and bounds. In addition to our wholesale nursery business we have a New Genetics Division. Our New Genetics Division brings products to market that are produced by J Berry Nursery and licensed to other companies, both domestically and internationally. We ship our products to over 2000 retail outlets covering more than half of the US from our primary production facility in Grand Saline, Texas which is conveniently located 70 miles East of downtown Dallas.

POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking someone who has the desire to be part of a contemporary, collaborative, and inventive team committed to the highest standards of quality and service.
The Controller works under the general supervision of, and reports to, the Vice President and CFO, while directly supervising the Accounting department. This person is a key financial leader for the organization, operating daily as the company’s top managerial and financial accountant. The position holds accountability for all financial accounting-related activities, reporting, treasury, taxes, and data processing. One of the primary objectives is to provide an accurate account of the Company’s financial position at a specific point in time and/or over a particular period.
The Controller is accountable for establishing and implementing the Company’s internal control policies and will apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The position includes analytical work and a thorough review of financial records to gather and assess qualitative and quantitative data affecting financial performance. The position relies on one’s experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals and operate with a wide degree of latitude and creativity.
Key Performance Objectives in the First Year
1. Generate timely, meaningful financial statements and supplementary reports that will enable effective management of the organization.
2. Collaborate with operations and management team to improve processes and identify cost savings.
3. Team with IT and management to fully utilize ERP system by ensuring the system is effectively integrated with other business systems, departments, and processes.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure the formulation, implementation, and application of accounting policies and procedures to support the Company’s strategies.
- Direct and/or execute company-wide financial reporting, accounting, data processing, compliance activities and inventory management.
- Provide timely and accurate financial statements, including general ledger roll-forwards and analysis.
- Enable the processing of transactions and closing the books in the most effective manner.
- Handle technical accounting issues that arise from changes in the business, new contracts, and acquisition activities.
- Provide supporting schedules and information for employees, annual audit, and annual tax returns.
- Conduct and/or coordinate the Company’s financial audit process to ensure compliance with state and federal statutes.
- Establish inventory standards and track, maintain, and reconcile inventory levels by product.
- Oversee physical and cycle inventory counts.
- Pricing, Corporate Development & Special Projects
o Leadership of special projects which enable effective management decision making or scenario planning, business valuation, capital budgeting, or restructuring.
o Challenging and standardizing the methodology for revenue and direct cost categorization by product / revenue type across the business.
o Leadership of cost and operational benchmarking projects.
o Presentation of findings and recommendations to the leadership team.
- Protect the organization's value by keeping information confidential.
- Analyzes information and options for special projects on an ad hoc basis.
- Lead and manage Accounting staff; maintaining work systems, procedures, and policies which enable and encourage the optimum performance of the team.
- Develop a plan to have cost visibility down to the sku level
- Analyze capital expenditure needs and develop the ROI model to justify these investments
Requirements
- A degree in Accounting is necessary for consideration.
- In depth knowledge of GAAP, audit practices, economic principles, and financial regulations.
- Effective judgment to be applied throughout the accounting and financial reporting process.
- Complex problem solving and analytical skills, displaying an ability to gather, relate and compare data, and ensure data is reliable, accurate and complete.
- Detail orientation to ensure related tasks are completed timely and accurately.
- Highly organized, capable of maintaining a systematic process for handling and recording all inventory, financial data, files and analysis.
- Essential characteristic of integrity, act according to the highest ethical standards pertaining to accounting controls and policies, able to maintain strict confidence as needed.
- Successfully managed multiple team members in a highly collaborative, results oriented manner while supporting the strategies and goals of the company.
- Strong business acumen and knowledge of supervisory and management techniques.
- Proficient in the use of accounting and ERP software such as, Microsoft Office and Excel.
- Must have work experience in manufacturing.
Qualifications
- CPA highly preferred
- 5 years of Controller experience
- Bachelor or Masters degree in Finance/Accounting
