CUSTODIAN
Under the general direction of the Lead Custodian/Custodial Supervisor, Custodians perform a wide variety of custodial duties to provide a clean, orderly, and safe campus environment; and perform related work as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Duties are performed on campus and off-site as needed. The standard schedule for this position will be Monday - Friday, 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM. Occasionally, this position will be required to start early, stay late, or work 4-10’s depending on the needs of the campus. Working effectively and collaboratively in a team environment is a must, along with the ability to work independently and unsupervised in the evening. Working conditions are as follows:
Custodians primarily work indoors; exterior custodial duties and traveling between buildings will take place outdoors and sometimes during the night. May be subject to inclement weather while working outdoors, which includes extreme hot and cold conditions. The work will be strenuous at times and includes lifting and carrying heavy objects, and standing, stooping, pushing, pulling, wiping, and kneeling for long periods. Custodians risk exposure to bloodborne pathogens and chemicals; and must follow strict safety procedures to avoid injuries. Requires the use of stepstools, ladders and climbing stairs.
This is a non-exempt, full-time, regular position. Overtime may be required as necessary.
All schedules include a half-hour paid meal break.
WAGE RANGE: $17 - $18 Per Hour

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Will on occasion be required to drive on behalf of Perry Technical Institute. Employee must possess a working vehicle, hold a valid driver’s license, have an acceptable driving record, and produce proof of insurance.
- Must be willing to consent to a drug test.
- Must be able to read, speak, and effectively communicate in English.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- One year of assignment-related custodial experience.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Work independently with minimal supervision, effectively managing tasks and responsibilities while maintaining a high level of motivation and productivity.
- Ensure all duties are completed on time by applying excellent time management skills.
- Strategically design and implement schedules and routines to seamless workflow and minimal disruption to the school environment.
- Utilize effective communication and collaboration skills to proactively engage with facility occupants and meet the needs of the campus.
- Execute a broad range of essential custodial responsibilities across the campus, ensuring a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment that supports the health, productivity, and overall experience of students, faculty, and staff.
- Proactively identify and address maintenance needs, adhere to high sanitation standards, and contribute to the seamless operation of campus facilities.
- Utilize advanced cleaning techniques and equipment to vacuum, shampoo, sweep, and mop floors, ensuring all campus spaces maintain the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and appearance.
- Implement proper floor care protocols to extend the longevity of surfaces, prevent hazards, and create a welcoming environment for students, employees, and visitors.
- Perform thorough cleaning and maintenance of windows, glass surfaces, and mirrors to enhance visibility, aesthetics, and overall facility presentation. Utilize professional-grade cleaning solutions and techniques to remove smudges, streaks, and debris, ensuring a polished and well-maintained appearance that contributes to a bright, welcoming, and professional campus environment.
- Manage the regular replacement of soiled dust mops, wet mop heads, and cleaning rags to maintain optimal sanitation standards and ensure the effectiveness of cleaning operations.
- Adhere to proper laundering and disposal protocols to prevent cross-contamination, enhance hygiene, and support a safe and healthy environment for students, faculty, and staff.
- Perform detailed dusting of furniture, fixtures, surfaces, and equipment to maintain a clean, allergen-free, and visually appealing environment. Utilize appropriate cleaning methods and tools to prevent dust buildup, protect facility assets, and contribute to a healthier indoor atmosphere.
- Efficiently manage waste disposal by gathering and emptying trash from all designated areas, ensuring a clean and sanitary environment. Conduct thorough cleaning and sanitization of trashcans, both inside and out, to prevent odors, deter pests, and uphold hygiene standards. Adhere to proper waste segregation and disposal protocols to support sustainability initiatives and maintain compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Ensure restrooms are meticulously serviced, cleaned, and fully stocked to maintain the highest standards of hygiene, safety, and comfort for all facility occupants. Perform deep cleaning and sanitization of all restroom surfaces, including sinks, toilets, stalls, and floors, using industry-approved disinfectants to prevent the spread of germs. Monitor and replenish essential supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper to ensure availability at all times.
- Proactively inspect for maintenance issues, such as leaks or malfunctions, and report concerns promptly.
- Perform specialized floor care by stripping, sealing, finishing, and polishing various floor surfaces to restore their appearance, extend their lifespan, and enhance overall building aesthetics.
- Adhere to established safety protocols and industry best practices when handling cleaning chemicals and operating power equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and effective operations. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the proper use, storage, and disposal of chemicals to prevent accidents, protect the health and safety of facility occupants, and ensure environmental compliance.
- Operate power equipment with precision, following manufacturer guidelines to achieve optimal cleaning results while minimizing the risk of injury or damage to property.
- Play a key role in maintaining campus security by vigilantly monitoring building access, ensuring that all doors are properly secured and locked at the end of the day or after use. Proactively inspect entry points and other vulnerable areas to prevent unauthorized access and protect the safety of the campus.
- Proactively monitor the campus for safety hazards, such as faulty equipment or unsafe conditions, and promptly report concerns.
- Assist with ice melt application, snow removal, and trash collection to maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming campus environment, supporting the safety and well-being of the campus community.
- Strictly adhere to all PTI operational procedures, as well as state and federal laws, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and contributing to the institution’s commitment to operational integrity, legal compliance, and best practices.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Medium to heavy work requires prolonged or repeated use of hands and wrists, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and frequent lifting and carrying of up to 30-50 lbs.
- Maintain good attendance and the ability to work independently or in a team environment.
