What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shop Manager position at J2 Cabinetry and Trim?
The shop manager is the link between the production office and the shop floor. This role requires direct supervision and management of shop employees while enforcing company policies and procedures. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational and leadership skills.
Responsibilities
Task priority / completion
- Coordinate with the production office to identify high priority tasks.
- Monitor tasks through the production process to ensure completion within a reasonable timeframe.
- Ensure all employees stay on task.
- Monitor employee task completion – Coordinate with production office to assign highest priority tasks maximizing labor utilization and reducing downtime.
Safety
- Enforce company safety policies.
- Notify upper management of any safety concerns that cannot be quickly addressed.
- Immediately report injuries, accidents, or unsafe conditions to the office manager.
- Collect and turn in weekly OSHA checklists.
Equipment Maintenance
- Enforce equipment maintenance procedures per the company maintenance schedule.
- Collect equipment maintenance logs as they are completed each month.
- Perform spot checks to confirm maintenance is being completed as documented.
- Notify upper management immediately with any equipment issues discovered or reported.
- Monitor stock of maintenance materials such as grease, oil, filters etc.
- Coordinate with the Purchasing Manager to reorder maintenance materials.
Production Quality Control
- Monitor product quality throughout the production process to identify quality concerns before further materials are consumed.
- Report quality issues to the production office for further direction.
- Ensure identified quality issues are addressed.
- Prevent known potential quality issues when assigning tasks based on the employee’s skill level, materials involved, and other factors.
Shop organization and cleanliness
- Direct the organization and flow of parts through the production process.
- Organize short-term storage of parts until the next department can accept them.
- Track the location of parts through the production process.
- Enforce the use of planned inbound staging areas for each department.
- Coordinate scheduled cleaning of the shop floor.
- Hold individual employees accountable for keeping work areas clean and organized.
Qualifications / Experience / Skills
Required:
- Experience managing a team of 5 employees in a shop environment.
- Experienced and proficient using email and Microsoft Office products such as Excel and Word.
Preferred:
- Forklift experience
- Cabinet or carpentry experience
Education
High school diploma or equivalent
Motor Vehicle Record
Candidate should have a good motor vehicle record and be insurable to drive a company vehicle.
