Youth Development Professional
The Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation is looking for a youth development professional to share Jackie’s dream. Jackie’s dream is to provide youth in East St. Louis, Illinois with the opportunity to win in life through world-class facilities and excellent programs that inspire the world!
As a Youth Development Professional, you will work with the Program Director, Athletic Manager and Program Manger to ensure youth have a safe, fun, caring and nurturing environment. Additionally, you will implement and deliver programming in various areas including the following programmatic areas: Education, Sports, Fitness and Recreation, STEAM, Arts, and JJK Winning in Life to name a few.
Primary Functions:

- Lead programs, activities and services that prepare youth to Win in Life.
- Assist in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs, services, events, and activities
- Incorporate JJK Winning in Life in everything we do
- Contribute to a healthy and safe environment, ensuring that facilities, equipment, and supplies are properly maintained
- Supervise youth and ensure their overall safety
- Take daily program attendance.
- Assist with JJK Center arrival, check-in, and departure process
- Assist volunteer instructors with programs and activity delivery
- Assist with snacks and meal distribution
- Assist with inventory of teaching materials and supplies
Program Highlights:
- Targeted age groups serviced are 5 - 18 years of age.
- Program areas include but are not limited to education, sports, fitness and recreation, STEAM, agriculture, character and leadership and the Arts.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- High School diploma/GED required. Bachelor’s degree preferred
- 2 years prior experience working with children preferred in either a paid or volunteer capacity, including but not limited to mentoring, tutoring, coaching, and teaching
- Communication skills – good written and oral communication skills and the ability to relate to the public and our youth
- Decision making skills – good judgment, systemic thinking, problem solving, performance organization and time management. Identify common elements, themes and risks in situations and actions
- Planning skills – monitoring, organizational planning, ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth and to organize and supervise members in a safe environment
- Relationship skills – strong customer service, strict confidentiality, ability to build relationships, maintain confidentiality, use meaningful measurements to satisfy customer needs and be a positive team player
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching, and carrying.
- Requires occasional sitting and/or typing using a computer with a mouse.
- Some outdoor programming is required.
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Must have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to respond swiftly in an emergency situation.
- Must be able to coordinate a variety of large and small tasks simultaneously and handle tension and stress in a positive manner.
- Flexible schedule and willing to cover shifts due to call-offs when possible.
