Position Title: Secondary Science Teacher (Biology)

Department: Building Level

Reports To: Building Principal

Contract: 2025-2026 School Year

SUMMARY:
The role of the secondary science teacher is to develop in each student an awareness of the role of science in economic and social progress; to motivate each student to acquire knowledge of scientific facts and principles and skills in scientific methods of problem solving; to discover, develop and advance students in the scientific fields.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach skills, knowledge and scientific methods through courses in science to secondary students, utilizing course guidelines aligned with Arkansas teaching/ learning standards and other appropriate curriculum pacing guides in teaching individual course content.
  • Plan a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions and student experiments; organizes laboratory activities for optimum learning.
  • Demonstrate scientific concepts by use of scientific equipment, experiments or teacher-prepared charts, sketches and other instructional aids.
  • Provide individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects and experiments are being worked on simultaneously.
  • Instruct students in proper use, care, and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment and plant and animal life.
  • Provide for safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment, and tools. Make minor adjustments and requests repairs to equipment as required.
  • Design learning activities that will relate the varied sciences to the physical world.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
  • Evaluate each student’s growth in scientific knowledge and skills.
  • Select and requisition books and instructional aids, and instructional supplies and maintain required inventory records.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  • Supervise students in and out-of-classroom during the assigned work day.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Maintain professional competence through professional learning activities provided by the District, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator in the evaluation process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/LICENSURE/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree required; field of study correlated to teaching assignment as a secondary science teacher with the appropriate licensure code or equivalent. Teachers with experience are valued; however, no prior experience is required.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Successful completion of pre-employment background checks. Appropriate personal and professional conduct at all times around students, other staff members and the general public.
