TITLE: Production Manager, Henry J. Leir Stage
STATUS: Seasonal
Part-Time, Remote: February 3 - May 3, 2025
Full-Time, On-site:  May 6 - August 28, 2025
START: Remote: February 3, 2025, On-site: May 6, 2025
END: August 28, 2025
ARRIVAL: May 5, 2025
DEPARTURE: August 29, 2025
COMPENSATION: $23.58-$25.63; Overtime (time and a half) after 48 hrs
Room and board, free access to performances, classes, talks, studios
HOURS: February 3 - May 3, 2025: 5-10 hrs per week 
May 6 - May 31, 2025: (5) Day work week averaging 40 hrs
June 2 - August 28, 2025: (6) Day work week averaging 55 hrs
REPORTS TO: Director of Technical Production

SUPERVISES: HJL Production Team: Stage Manager, Wardrobe Technician, Audio Engineer
SUPPORTS: Production Interns; Full-Time and Seasonal Production Staff; Programming, Facilities, Front of House and Media Staff; Faculty, Dancers and Staff of The School at Jacob’s Pillow
 
We are looking for a Production Manager to join the Production Department and work closely with/report directly to the Director of Technical Production (DoTP). The Henry J. Leir Stage Production Manager (HJL PM) is responsible for the planning, preparation and execution of all technical elements of all activity within the Doris Duke Theater (HJL) and its support spaces. During the pre-season, the Production Manager takes the lead in the advancement of HJL productions as well as participates in the screening and interviewing of seasonal employees. During the festival, the HJL PM is the main production point of contact for all HJL Companies and works closely and collaboratively with their staff and the programming department to support them during their time at the Festival. The HJL PM supervises the The Henry J. Leir Stage Production Team (Stage Manager, Wardrobe Technician, Audio Engineer) as well as overhire crew members. They also supervise, train and mentor the Production Interns during their HJL PM rotation focusing on providing them a deeper knowledge of their position’s roles and responsibilities.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain a safe, healthy and accessible work environment at all times.
  • Contact artists and coordinate with production team members on specific needs; maintain early and constant communication with the DoTP regarding coordination of artists’ requirements and festival resources.
  • Working closely with the Production Administrator to coordinate schedule for all HJL crew calls, including load-ins, load-outs, extended rehearsals or performance calls, notes, and changeovers. 
  • Actively participate in the training and mentorship of the Production Intern Cohort including teaching hands-on and practical classes and workshops.
  • Supervise Seasonal Production Staff and Interns in their specific duties and offer advice and guidance towards the completion of the assigned tasks.
  • Supervise and assist the HJL Stage Manager in the running of rehearsals and performances.
  • Supervise all work calls at HJL including the daily setup and takedown of the stage, load-ins, load-outs, changeovers, and notes calls.
  • Act as run crew for HJL performances as needed
  • Actively participate in work calls, technical rehearsals, or performances as needed including as a member of the HJL run crew.
  • Attend all departmental and production meetings including a weekly All-Staff Meeting, and facilitate production meetings as necessary. 
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of all necessary paperwork.
  • Assist the House Manager and the HJL Stage Manager in the efficient movement of patrons into the venues and coordinate with backstage personnel on starting times, late seating pauses, intermissions, etc.
  • Under the general direction of the DoTP, assist with coordination of emergency response for staff and patrons in the event of an emergency or extreme weather.
  • Complete Adult/Child CPR, First Aid, and Cultural Competence Training (provided to all seasonal staff during the pre-season).
  • Assist and support other departments, including non-production departments, as needed.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience in production management, stage management or other technical theater leadership. 
  • Strong knowledge and the ability to instruct others on general theatrical production systems and standard operating procedures.
  • Experience managing outdoor or non-conventional performance venues or productions.
  • Knowledge of production-related health and safety best practices and ability to identify and correct potential hazards.
  • Working knowledge of the role, responsibilities and standard operating procedures of all production departments.
  • Proficiency with the Google App suite.
  • Experience with budgeting and scheduling.
  • Ability to work proactively, creatively, flexibly and collaboratively.
  • Willingness to learn.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Familiarity with Vectorworks, AutoCAD, Qlab.
  • Experience working and/or teaching in a performing arts educational environment. 
  • Knowledge of dance or the performing arts industry.
  • Knowledge of production software including lighting, sound, and drafting applications. 
  • Experience production or stage managing dance productions or companies.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Working 5 to 6 days a week in wooded areas with exposure to native wildlife including, but not limited to, rodents, ticks and mosquitos
  • Working 5 to 6 days a week outdoors in all weather conditions including inclement weather 
  • Moving equipment up to 50lbs alone or with assistance
  • Moving through and between multiple locations throughout the entire campus 
  • Remaining in a stationary position for extended periods of time
  • Working in show conditions with theatrical and atmospheric elements including but not limited to: fog, haze, strobes, dim lights, loud sounds
