Description

TITLE: Henry J. Leir Stage Manager
STATUS: Seasonal
Full-Time, On-site:  May 20, 2025 - August 28, 2025
START: May 20, 2025
END: August 28, 2025
ARRIVAL: May 19, 2025
DEPARTURE: August 29, 2025
COMPENSATION: $20.50-$23.58; Overtime (time and a half) after 48 hrs
Room and board, free access to performances, classes, talks, and studios
HOURS: May 20 - May 31, 2025: (5) Day work week averaging 40 hrs
June 2 - August 28, 2025: (6) Day work week averaging 54 hrs
Hours will vary during The Festival depending on weekly schedules and all efforts will be made to provide 48 hours a week.

The Jacob’s Pillow Production Department seeks a stage manager to join its seasonal staff for the 2025 Summer Festival. The Henry J. Leir Stage Manager reports to the Henry J. Leir Stage Production Manager (HJL PM) and works closely and collaboratively with the other members of the HJL Production Team to support all activity on the outdoor, uncovered stage and its support spaces. During the pre-season, they will assist the HJL PM in communicating with visiting companies and The School at Jacob’s Pillow. The HJL SM also works with the HJL PM to plan and prepare for the HJL’s season which includes over 30 productions by visiting companies and artists as well as 4 showings by The School at Jacob’s Pillow. During The Festival. As the majority of the companies that perform on the HJL stage do not travel with an SM the HLJ Stage Manager will work closely with the visiting company’s artistic team to fill that role during their stay at Jacob’s Pillow. In the event a company has an SM the HJL Stage Manager will assist that person as needed. The HJL SM also assists the HJL PM with the organization and maintenance of HJL’s stage, infrastructure, and equipment.  
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain a safe, healthy, and accessible work environment at all times.
  • Actively participate in the opening and closing of all of the Festival's performance spaces, studios, exhibition spaces, and temporary tents.
  • Actively participate in all assigned work calls.
  • Assist the HJL PM in communication with visiting companies to ensure the details of their production needs are clear and accurate.  
  • Participate in all HJL technical rehearsals and performances as the stage manager or assistant stage manager. 
  • Participate in the creation of detailed and comprehensive paperwork including schedules, daily calls, labor plans, and backstage run sheets.
  • Ensure that the HJL stage is prepared and safe for all activity by leading daily and show specific checks, maintenance, and set-up. 
  • Assist the HJL PM in making improvements to HJL’s infrastructure and equipment.
  • Remain in constant communication with the HJL PM to ensure proper and necessary support for the visiting companies.
  • Maintain clean and orderly audio workspaces, backstage equipment, and storage areas in the HJL. 
  • Participate in the training of Production Interns by offering constructive guidance and by acting as a role model and supportive co-worker.
  • Support and assist with the installation and operation of the Season Opening Gala and special events as needed.
  • Provide support to Jacob’s Pillow Media Team in documenting performances, talks, and events.
  • Support the installation of work into The Pillow’s exhibition spaces. 
  • Support the activation of Weather Plans for HJL and other events and activities.
  • Attend departmental, production, and all-staff meetings.
  • Under the general direction of the DoTP, assist with coordination of emergency response for staff and patrons in the event of an emergency or extreme weather
  • Complete Adult/Child CPR, First Aid, and Cultural Competence Training (provided to all seasonal staff during the pre-season)
  • Assist other departments, including non-production departments, as needed.

Qualifications


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 
  • 2-3 years of related experience in theatrical stage management.
  • Familiarity with general theatrical production systems and standard operating procedures including production-related health & safety practices.
  • Proficiency with the Google App suite.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION
  • Knowledge and experience working in dance production.  
  • Experience working in a performing arts educational environment.
  • Experience with wardrobe, lighting, stage operations or audio/video systems, equipment, software, and standard operating procedures.
  • Experience with advanced production technology such as augmented reality, virtual reality, or robotics.
  • Experience working outdoors or in non-conventional performance venues or productions.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Working regularly in wooded areas with exposure to native wildlife including, but not limited to, rodents, ticks, and mosquitos.
  • Working regularly outdoors in all weather conditions including inclement weather. 
  • Working a 6-day work week including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
  • Moving equipment up to 50 lbs alone or with assistance.
  • Moving through and between multiple locations throughout the entire campus including over uneven terrain.
  • Remaining in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
  • Working at heights above 6 feet and up to 30 feet.
  • Ascending and descending straight and step ladders.
  • Operating push around or drivable person lifts including at heights.
  • Working in show conditions with theatrical and atmospheric elements including but not limited to: fog, haze, strobes, dim lights, and loud sounds.
