Description

TITLE: Ted Shawn Theatre Stage Carpenter 
STATUS: Seasonal
Full-Time, On-site:  May 20, 2025 - August 28, 2025
START: May 20, 2025
END: August 28, 2025
ARRIVAL: May 19, 2025
DEPARTURE: August 29, 2025
COMPENSATION: $20.50-$23.58; Overtime (time and a half) after 48 hrs
Room and board, free access to performances, classes, talks, and studios
HOURS: May 20 - May 31, 2025: (5) Day work week averaging 40 hrs
June 2 - August 28, 2025: (6) Day work week averaging 54 hrs
Hours will vary during The Festival depending on weekly schedules and all efforts will be made to provide 48 hours a week.

SUPPORTS: Production Interns; Full-Time and Seasonal Production Staff; Programming, Facilities, and Front-of-House Staff; Visiting Company Members; Faculty, Dancers and Staff of The School at Jacob’s Pillow
 
The Jacob’s Pillow Production Department seeks a stage carpenter to join its seasonal staff for the 2025 Summer Festival. The Ted Shawn Theatre Stage Carpenter reports to the Ted Shawn Theatre Production Manager (TST PM) and works closely and collaboratively with the other members of the Ted Shawn Theatre Production Team to support all activity in the theater and its support spaces. With the guidance and management of the Stage Operations Supervisor and TST PM, the TST Stage Carpenter leads the installation and operation of all rigging, flooring, staging, scenery, and other stage technology in the Ted Shawn Theatre (TST). During the pre-season, they also participate in the final planning and preparation for the TST’s programming which includes nine visiting companies and a season-opening Gala Performance. During the festival, the TST Stage Carpenter supports the visiting company’s technical staff by leading a team of seasonal staff, interns and overhire crew members in the installation of scenery as well as making any needed adjustments to the theatre’s repertory infrastructure. Under the supervision of the TST PM the TST Stage Carpenter ensures the smooth operation of all productions by leading the TST run crew members in scene changes, soft good operation, floor swaps as well as any pre or post-show preparations. They also assist the TST PM and Stage Operations Supervisor with the organization and maintenance of the TST’s stage operations infrastructure, storage areas, and equipment. 
 
 RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain a safe, healthy, and accessible work environment.
  • Actively participate in the opening and closing of all of the Festival's performance spaces, studios, exhibition spaces, and temporary tents.
  • Actively participate in all assigned work calls.
  • Participate in all TST technical rehearsals and performances as a member of the TST run crew. 
  • Assist the TST PM and Stage Operations Supervisor in communication with visiting companies to ensure the details of their stage operations needs are clear and accurate.  
  • Participate in the creation of detailed and comprehensive paperwork including labor plans, changeover narratives, and production schedules. 
  • Under the guidance of the Stage Operations Supervisor and with the support of interns, seasonal staff, and overhire crew lead the installation of repertory and show specific stage operations equipment including rigging, flooring, soft goods, staging, and scenery.
  • Act as the primary stage operations point of contact for all TST visiting companies during their time on campus.
  • Ensure that the TST stage is prepared and safe for all activity by leading daily and show-specific cleaning, maintenance, checks, and set-up. 
  • Collaborate with the TST PM, TST run crew, and the visiting company’s technical staff to choreograph scene changes, floor swaps, scenery moves, and props hand-offs. 
  • Assist the Stage Operations Supervisor in making improvements to The Pillow’s theaters, studios, and other facilities.
  • Remain in constant communication with the TST PM and Stage Operations Supervisor to ensure proper and necessary support for the visiting companies.
  • Assist in the creation and installation of decor or scenery for events.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly stage, backstage, and storage areas. 
  • Participate in the training of Production Interns by offering constructive guidance and by acting as a role model and supportive co-worker.
  • Support and assist with the installation and operation of the Season Opening Gala and special events as needed.
  • Provide support to Jacob’s Pillow Media Team in documenting performances, talks, and events.
  • Support the installation of work into The Pillow’s exhibition spaces. 
  • Support the activation of Weather Plans for HJL and other events and activities.
  • Attend departmental, production, and all-staff meetings.
  • Under the general direction of the Director of Technical Production assist with coordination of emergency response for staff and patrons in the event of an emergency or extreme weather
  • Complete Adult/Child CPR, First Aid, and Cultural Competence Training (provided to all seasonal staff during the pre-season)
  • Assist other departments, including non-production departments, as needed.

Qualifications


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 
  • 2-3 years of related production experience.
  • Proven ability to lead others in the installation and use of stage operations systems including rigging, staging, flooring and masking. 
  • Knowledge of industry-standard theatrical rigging and scenery construction and installation practices.
  • Knowledge of production-related health and safety best practices and ability to identify and correct potential hazards.
  • Experience with the safe use of hand and power tools.
  • Proficiency with the Google App suite, Vectorworks, and/or AutoCAD.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION
  • Knowledge and experience working in dance production.  
  • Experience working in a performing arts educational environment.
  • Experience with wardrobe, lighting, or audio/video systems, equipment, software, and standard operating procedures.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Driving trucks and cargo vans in urban and rural areas.
  • Experience with advanced production technology such as augmented reality, virtual reality, or robotics.
  • Experience working outdoors or in non-conventional performance venues or productions.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Working regularly in wooded areas with exposure to native wildlife including, but not limited to, rodents, ticks, and mosquitos.
  • Working regularly outdoors in all weather conditions including inclement weather. 
  • Working a 6-day work week including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
  • Moving equipment up to 50 lbs alone or with assistance.
  • Moving through and between multiple locations throughout the entire campus including over uneven terrain.
  • Remaining in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
  • Working at heights above 6 feet and up to 30 feet.
  • Ascending and descending straight and step ladders.
  • Operating push around or drivable person lifts including at heights.
  • Working in show conditions with theatrical and atmospheric elements including but not limited to: fog, haze, strobes, dim lights, and loud sounds.
