General Information:
James Madison University (JMU) is honored to host the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellows Program on Society and Governance, funded by a grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. This program will bring emerging leaders from Southeast Asia to JMU from April 17 – May 17, 2025, followed by a week in Washington, D.C., where they will join all 250 YSEALI fellows for group meetings and reflections.
During their time at JMU, the fellows will engage in discussions and activities on U.S. society and governance, with sub-themes including Democracy and Policymaking, Refugee Resettlement, Anti-Corruption and Accountability, and the U.S. Healthcare System. They will also participate in academic and cultural tours in our nearby areas, Richmond, Washington, D.C., and Boston.
JMU's Center for Global Engagement (CGE) is seeking six dedicated student mentors for the YSEALI program. This is a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful cross-cultural mentorship while gaining hands-on experience in leadership and global exchange! Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as a mentor and guide for YSEALI fellows, fostering cross-cultural exchange and engagement.
- Offer knowledgeable guidance on U.S. democratic principles and institutions, engaging fellows in meaningful discussions and addressing their questions.
- Assist fellows in navigating campus life and local community resources.
- Support program events, workshops, and activities as well as the possible opportunity for off-campus excursions.
- Act as a liaison between the fellows and CGE staff to ensure a positive experience.
- Dedicate 20 hours per week to mentorship duties, including social and cultural activities.
Qualifications:
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Interest in international relations, leadership development, and cultural exchange.
- Experience mentoring, guiding, or working with diverse populations is a plus.
- Enthusiasm for fostering connections between U.S. and Southeast Asian communities.

Conditions of Employment:
Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
Students must have a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA.
