About us

We are seeking qualified and caring individuals interested in working with male children between the ages of 11-17 years old (up to 5 in the house) at our New Dawn location. These kids have experienced abuse or neglect. Our goal is to provide an emergency and temporary, yet safe and stable environment.

Youth Residential Counselor Job Description;

New Dawn is a program that provides intensive and individualized services to meet the behavioral needs of teenage boys between the ages of 13 to 17 years old.

We are looking for persons who believe it is their life’s calling to meet those needs with compassion, empathy, and effective skills.

STARTING SALARY: $19.67 p.hr

SHIFTS: Full-time/ Part-time

  • Night Shifts: typically 3pm-11pm.
  • Overnight Shifts: typically 11pm-7am.
  • Weekend Shifts: Friday to Sunday

What you can expect:

  • Direct service or youth counselors work with youth in foster care who have intense and challenging behaviors and/or mental health diagnosis some physical. Suggested experience in nursing/ caregiver / or youth trauma.
  • Work involves responsibility for processing admission and discharges;
  • Monitoring and documenting client behaviors and activities;
  • Participating and assisting with educational, social, and recreational activities;
  • Providing a safe and therapeutic environment; interacting in a warm compassionate manner;
  • De-escalating clients; promoting client achievement of treatment plan goals and objectives.
  • Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures guided by Washington Administrative Code.
  • Serve as a positive role model; utilizes approved behavior modification techniques to help clients learn desirable behaviors; provide positive reinforcement and support to clients.
  • Conducts and participates in basic life skills activities with the youth.
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of individual treatment plans; supports client goals; encourages and assists clients in achieving their goals.
  • Performs general cleaning responsibilities such as laundry, mopping, garbage removal, etc.
  • Attends in-service training as required by contract or management.
  • Appropriately engages with verbally and/or physically aggressive clients to support safe de-escalation.
  • Performs aggression control techniques and assists with restraints when deemed necessary from required training.
  • Communicates effectively to diffuse potentially life-threatening situations.
  • Transports clients to other agencies, hospitals, homes, community activities, etc. Orients the client to the facility; explains rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Completes required program documentation.
  • Administers medications based on program policies and procedures.
  • Conduct physical grounds and facility safety checks.
  • OTHER ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
  • Engage in clear, consistent, and professional communication with all youth, program staff, service providers, and community members.
  • Model competency, good judgment, and self-control in the presence of children and when performing duties.
  • Model pro-social and appropriate behaviors and suggest alternatives to inappropriate or disruptive behaviors. Staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings, and program meetings as appropriate or upon request and complete required training.
  • Ability to effectively de-escalate any conflict with youth as age and behaviorally appropriate.
  • Willingness to participate in pre-service and ongoing training.
  • Other duties as required/assigned. Promote and model teamwork and collaboration with co-workers

WORKING CONDITIONS:This 2-story and fenced home is set in a safe and quiet neighborhood near schools, university, grocery store, and easy access to major freeways.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift upwards of 25 lbs., on occasion.
  • Must be able to bend, squat, kneel, and reach out and above shoulders.
  • Must be able to go up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to provide a full array of service to include cooking, cleaning, behavior management, while maintaining line of sight during wake hours.

Travel Requirements:

  • Little travel is required, and is typically local or regional, to attend or provide training.
  • Employees may transport youth to outside activities and school and must have a valid & driver's license and auto insurance if driving on company business.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the home.

Minimum qualifications Youth Counselor:

  • At least twenty-one (21) years of age:
  • At least 12 months of documented experience working with vulnerable populations; or Attending classes at an accredited college or university related to caring vulnerable populations;
  • Meet additional duties and qualifications detailed in a professional accreditation requirement that apply to JMC.
  • Basic computer proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word and other applications.
  • Must clear a criminal history background check and pass a pre-employment drug screening test.
  • Valid Washington State Food Handlers Card
  • Valid CPR/First Aid Certification

Current TB results Starting salary $19.67 p.hr DOE EEOC Employer
