Description

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The Medical Center Educator serves a variety of functions in a hospital setting. They evaluate educational needs, set educational goals, develop, update, incorporate, and implement both non-clinical and clinical educational programs that meet hospital accreditation requirements and improve medical practices for patients' safety and well-being. The Medical Center Educator is also responsible for developing a curriculum to satisfy continuing education requirements for other medical personnel.

This is a full-time benefited position working 80 hours per two week pay period. The hours are Monday - Friday.

Job Functions

  • Direct clinical practice to include executing nursing care and assessing results, teaching nurses, performing advanced evaluations and providing guidance for testing new procedures.
  • Continually investigate methods for improving patient care.
  • Collaborates with administration and departmental managers to plan and implement educational programs on all shifts to meet the goals and objectives of JRMC.
  • Performs annual educational needs assessment and creates annual strategic educational plan per state regulations for staff including educational needs identified by nursing leadership and all relevant quality improvement activities.
  • Responsible for the learning management system including the design and production of learning modules for both newly hired employees and organization wide annual learning. Coordinate annual learning along with assisting managers in the creation of new learning tools and resources within the learning management software.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources to ensure Education Policy is current and accurately reflects coursework requirement for clinical and non-clinical staff.
  • Develops and administers nursing skill competencies at JRMC for all levels of care providers.
  • Leads and actively participates in organizational skills labs and educational programs.
  • Coordinates and actively participates in unit-based orientation of licensed and non-licensed staff at JRMC. Solicits involvement of unit staff as preceptors and mentors.
  • Provides Preceptor/Mentor education programs as needed. Provides on-going support to Preceptors.
  • Participates in appropriate committees and collaborates to promote a high standard of care by licensed and non-licensed staff.
  • Supports all Nursing Department QAPI initiatives.
  • Coordinates JRMC led BLS, CPR, ACLS, PALS, NRP and CPI for direct care staff as required; offer optional training for all other employees.
  • Participates in developing, maintaining and updating written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the facility with regards to clinical staff education.
  • Uses adult education principles and instructional design to provide an effective and efficient system of staff education.
  • Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to solve problems and change processes to improve function, the quality of patient care and support systems.
  • Provides for communication of policy, procedure and other appropriate changes to staff and gathers feedback from staff within unit.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS OF JOB POSITION

  • PREPARATION AND TRAINING - Work requires a professional level of knowledge acquired by completing an accredited RN nursing education program. Candidate must hold ND Board of Nursing RN licensure. Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required, Masters in nursing preferred. Position requires completion of BLS CPR. Position is required to attend Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training in the appropriate timeframe according to department orientation checklist.
  • EXPERIENCE - Minimum of three years of general nursing experience in hospital (health care field). Must be computer proficient, including skills in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with responsibility of developing and coordinating educational activities preferred. Knowledge of Joint Commission Standards. Time to reach competency on the job: 3 months to 6 months following orientation to the work area.
  • ATTENDANCE - Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility of each employee at JRMC. Employee are expected to report to work as scheduled, on time and prepared to start working. Employees are also expected to remain at work for their entire work schedule.

  • RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WELFARE OF OTHERS - It is the responsibility of the professional RN to continuously uphold the highest degree of performance within defined and acceptable nursing practice standards.
  • MENTAL/VISUAL EFFORT - Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner. Must demonstrate physical and emotional ability to meet agreed upon work schedule and performance standards required by the position. Required duties are such that concentrated attention must be applied on demand consistent with manual skill requirements in situations that may at times be stressful. Visual acuity necessary for reading charts and working with medical devices; color perception necessary for interpreting testing procedures involving color comparisons.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS - OSHA job classification: This position is defined as a Category I in which the employee does have exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Position requires exposure to patients with infectious disease and odor. Must practice aseptic techniques and observe Standard Precautions. Participates in and complies with Jamestown Regional Medical Center Safety Management program. Position is subject to frequent interruptions. Work may be beyond normal working hours. Work may be on weekends and holidays; beyond normal working hours and/or temporarily in other positions when necessary.
