Position Summary

Will receive incoming emergency and non-emergency calls. Incumbent is expected to dispatch calls for service to local Law Enforcement, Fire Rescue, Emergency Services personnel and other local and state officials. Will maintain accurate and complete dispatch records, monitor radio communications and provide directions to officials, as needed. This is an essential position and staff are subject to recall and standby for incidents such as natural and man-made disasters, and for severe weather such as hurricanes expected to impact Jasper County.

Major Duties

· Receives, monitors, and dispatches radio communications traffic for EMS, Fire, and Law Enforcement Departments throughout Jasper County, including all 911 calls.

· Dispatches the appropriate first responders to incident locations; maintains radio contact with first responders in the field.

· Takes emergency and non-emergency phone calls; provides emergency medical instructions to callers prior to the arrival of emergency medical personnel as appropriate.

· Monitors weather conditions; initiates weather alerts to responders as necessary.

· Dispatches wrecker services to appropriate incident locations.

· Enters and retrieves data from the National Crime Information Center network and state departments of motor vehicles; runs driver’s license and license plate requests for officers in the field; enters and verifies identify of persons that are wanted or missing, enters and verifies articles, guns, and vehicles; runs criminal background checks.

· Verifies addresses, provides call and unit history logs to local agencies.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

· 2-3 years related 9-1-1 call taking and dispatching experience.

· The ability to speak bilingually.

· The ability to operate public safety radio and telecommunications equipment.

· The ability to operate public safety software and systems.

· The ability to listen to details and take information accurately.

· The ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

· The ability to handle and respond to highly stressful situations.

· Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local statutes.

· Understanding of geography and road system of Jasper County.

· Understanding of radio codes used in public safety work.

· Excellent computer skills are essential to success in this position.

· Excellent customer service skills are essential.

Physical Demands

· The work is typically performed on 12-hour shifts, while seated at a desk or console, standing, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light objects, uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, accuracy and speed.

· May occasionally require the ability to travel to attend training and/or conferences.

Work Environment

· The work is performed in a 9-1-1 dispatch center that is often noisy and has dim lighting.

· The work is typically performed at a console that has 6 computer monitors, 3 mice, 2 keyboards, and 1 keypad.

Minimum Qualifications

· Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

· Requires the ability to provide a birth certificate.

· Requires the ability to legally work in the United States of America.

· Requires the ability to pass and maintain a clear criminal history record.

· Requires the ability to pass and maintain a clear drug screening record.

· Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive and restricted information.

· Requires the ability to successfully complete in-house on-the-job training within the timeframe of the training program.

· Requires the ability to obtain and maintain certifications required by national standards, and State and Federal policy.

· Requires the ability to understand and follow County and Division policies and procedures.

· Requires the ability to quickly and accurately type information. (At least 45 WPM)
