The Retreat Director of Nursing, with the assistance of the RNH Administrator, is responsible for planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, reporting, budgeting, and management of facilities, people, supplies, and equipment in such a way that meaningful nursing service is established to render the optimum of resident care.

GENERAL PURPOSE AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Responsibilities and Duties: Responsible for developing and maintaining nursing service objectives, standards of nursing practice, and nursing policies and procedures manual with the help of the RNH Administrator to ascertain the greatest degree of care to each resident.

Personnel:

  • Decide the kinds and numbers of staff needed and how it will be organized for the purpose of authority and responsibility and in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Ascertain that each employee in the nursing department is aware of the lines of authority.
  • Delegate responsibilities as appropriate to qualified staff members.
  • Provide sufficient staff to assure uninterrupted service to residents at all times.
  • Supervise the work of all personnel.
  • Provide opportunities for regular in-service.
  • Assumes responsibilities for own personal and professional growth.

Resident Care:

  • Ascertain that each individual has a Resident Assessment and a Comprehensive Care Plan, which properly reflects his/her problems and how to deal with them.
  • Insure that nursing personnel provide treatments, medications, diets, rehabilitative nursing care, activities of daily living, protective service, and training in self care as stated in the care plan to ascertain that optimum comfort and care is provided.
  • Holds regularly scheduled conferences with Activities & Social Services Director, Food Service Supervisor, Dietitian, and other professionals to review and update the services needed by residents.
  • Ascertain that physicians are visiting on a regular basis.
  • Schedule conferences with residents and family when necessary to interpret policy and smooth relationships pertaining to nursing service.
  • Refer residents and families to social worker and/or proper community agencies when necessary.
  • Make rounds of entire resident load on a daily basis to make sure proper patient care is rendered.
  • Reviews charts, medication records, and other care related documents to ascertain proper charting and updating of information.
  • Performs all aspects of patient / resident care in an environment that optimizes patient / resident safety and reduces the likelihood of medical / health care errors.

Related Functions:

  • Actively Participates in: staff meetings, in-service programs, Senior Management Meetings, Department Manager meetings, Medical Staff meetings, Quality Assurance Committee meetings and P.A.R. (Patients at Risk) meetings and Environment of Care Committee meetings.
  • Collaborates with facility leaders in developing, implementing, reviewing, revising, and monitoring facility-wide performance improvement and infection control activities.
  • Promotes good public relations between nursing home staff, patients, families, visitors, and medical staff.
  • Cooperates when needed if the facility faces an emergency or unusual circumstance.
  • Maintains confidentiality of resident information.
  • Displays a neat, clean, professional appearance at all times.
  • Exhibits an attitude that promotes harmony and goodwill in the workplace.
  • Promotes facility culture by providing quality, comprehensive services to all customers through a team approach.
  • Takes routine nursing call weekly Monday through Friday for nursing service.
  • Takes alternating administrative call with Senior Management Team.
  • Takes nursing weekend (Friday afternoon through Monday morning) call as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Administrator or designee.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Training Experience: Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and hold current active license as a Registered Nurse in Georgia with no restrictions on license.

Must have a working knowledge of nursing service, rehabilitation nursing and geriatric nursing. Freedom from illegal use of drugs and freedom from use and effects of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.

Verbal and Written Communication Skills: Must be able to read, write and speak the English language fluently. Must be able to relate to individuals with various ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Interpersonal Skills: Relates cooperatively and constructively with all patients / residents, guests, families, physicians, peers, and all healthcare members as well as anyone that JHS’ employees interact with while performing their daily duties.

Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Full ambulation and precise eye-hand coordination.

Essential Mental Abilities: Knowledgeable and competent to perform essential functions. Must be able to deal with a variety of personalities with whom the employer comes into contact with, both pleasant and irate.

Essential Sensory Requirements: Ability to visually and audibly perform all essential functions.

Essential Physical Requirements: Moderate to high amount of walking, standing, sitting, reaching, pulling, pushing, stooping, and kneeling. Minimum lifting requirement of 50 pounds.

Exposure to Hazards: Exposure to infectious diseases, blood, and body fluids.

Other: Assume responsibility for professional growth and expertise.

  • Must meet minimum physical requirements as outlined in this job description.
  • Must meet education and experience requirements as outlined in this job description.
  • Must meet all billing and legal compliance requirements as established by Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Must comply with State and Federal Rules and Regulations for Nursing Homes.
