Job Summary
The Special Needs Counselor is a key member of our inclusive summer camp team, providing direct support to campers with diverse needs. This 9-week contracted position is ideal for individuals passionate about making a positive difference while growing their skills in a dynamic and supportive environment. Reporting to the Unit Head and Director of Special Needs, you’ll help create a fun, safe, and enriching experience for all campers..
Key Responsibilities
- Camper Support
- Build meaningful connections with campers by providing encouragement and tailored support throughout the day.
- Monitor the safety and well being of 1-3 campers, depending on program placement.
- Foster an inclusive and engaging environment where every camper feels valued and supported.
- Program Participation
- Actively engage in all camp programs, from creative arts to outdoor adventures, modeling positivity and enthusiasm.
- Foster an inclusive environment that celebrates the strengths and abilities of each camper.
- Maintain daily written communication logs to track camper progress and share insights with staff.
- Team Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with fellow counselors, senior staff, and campers to maintain a cohesive and supportive team dynamic.
- Participate in weekly supervision meetings.
- Communicate effectively to share updates, celebrate successes, and address challenges.
- Professionalism
- Exhibit maturity, integrity, and strong moral character while using positive behavior management techniques.
- Stay committed to campers’ success by ensuring consistent attendance and engagement throughout the summer.
Qualifications
- Education
- A high school diploma or GED is required, with preference given to individuals pursing or holding a degree in fields like psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), social work, education, or special education.
- Experience
- Hands on experience with children or young adults with special needs in structured environments, such as camps or educational settings.
- Familiarly with working with individuals who have cognitive impairments, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental delays, or mental health challenges.
- Skills
- Outstanding leadership and teamwork abilities, capable of creating a supportive, energetic culture among staff.
- Adaptability and quick thinking in dynamic situations.
- Expertise in positive behavioral management and effective communication with diverse groups.
Job Types: Full-time, Temporary
Pay: From $15.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 38 per week
