Position Overview
The Heavy Equipment Operator for the Jefferson Davis Parish Police Jury is responsible for operating and maintaining various types of heavy equipment to support road maintenance, drainage improvement, and related projects within the Parish. Reporting directly to the Area Road Foreman, this role requires adherence to safety standards, equipment efficiency, and professionalism in interactions with colleagues and the community.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Operate heavy equipment, including tractors, backhoes, graders, mowers, ditchers, culvert cleaners, and dump trucks, to maintain roads, drainage systems, and right-of-ways.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance of equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs.
- Report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns promptly to the Area Road Foreman.
- Ensure proper and safe use of equipment in compliance with safety protocols and operational guidelines.
Road and Drainage Maintenance
- Assist in the repair and maintenance of parish roads, road shoulders, and drainage systems.
- Conduct roadside chemical spraying for vegetation control as needed.
- Perform tasks such as spreading gravel, grading roads, clearing debris, and ditch excavation.
- Respond to emergency road or drainage situations, including storm cleanup and flooding mitigation.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all safety policies and procedures outlined in the Jefferson Davis Parish Police Jury Policy Manual.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required and ensure equipment operation complies with safety standards.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including work sites and assigned yard areas.
Team Collaboration and Communication
- Work effectively as part of a team, taking direction from the Area Road Foreman.
- Communicate progress, issues, or needs related to assigned tasks clearly and professionally.
- Provide support to other team members during larger maintenance or emergency projects.
Additional Duties
- Transport equipment and materials to and from job sites using parish vehicles.
- Assist with the maintenance of parish yards and facilities as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Area Road Foreman or Road Administrator.
Qualifications
- Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with Tanker Endorsement or obtain one within six months of hire/promotion. Failure to obtain a CDL within the specified timeframe may result in termination/demotion.
- Demonstrated ability to proficiently operate heavy equipment, specifically tractors, graders, excavators, dump trucks, and backhoes.
- Basic mechanical knowledge for minor equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Dependable, efficient, and able to work independently or under supervision.

Work Hours
- Hours: Standard workweek is Monday thru Thursday 6:00am to 4:30pm, with flexibility required for emergencies or special projects.
