What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mental Health Specialist (MHS)/ Mental Health Professional (MHP) position at Jenkins Counseling Services?
Summary
Under general supervision, employee performs social service functions to include assisting clients in meeting day to day requirements while enabling them to access through treatment skills to achieve their optimal level of emotional
health, including providing basic consultation, teaching and specialized social services for patients/families receiving care. The MHS/MHP services provided include: crisis intervention and PSR. The MHS/MHP serves as an integral member of the treatment team and is also responsible for case management of patients’ internal/external support systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Provide direct care to clients to specified caseload under clinical supervision;
2. Serve as resource person for other professionals and paraprofessionals in their specific area of expertise;
3. Attend and participate in individual care conferences, treatment planning activities and discharge planning;
4. Function as the client’s advocate in all treatment decisions affecting the client; and
5. Prepare and write notes or other documents related to recovery (e.g. assessment, progress notes, treatment plans, etc.).
6. Identifies Treatment Plan impairments based on assessment findings.
7. Provides age appropriate interventions (individual and family) using principles and practices as defined by assessment.
8. Attends patient treatment team meetings for assigned caseload.
9. Completes proper documentation in ShareNote following each treatment intervention.
10. Provides case management of caseload & communication with all sources to make sure quality of care.
11. Conducts intake interviews of patients and/or family members to gather needed information.
12. Collects data/information and relates findings to necessary agency staff.
13. Talks to clients and other persons regarding diseases, treatments, social or financial situations, emotional stress and/or other problems.
14. Acts as a liaison between patients/families and the agency staff & other agencies.
15. Utilizes available information to evaluate the effectiveness of services provided in producing the desired outcomes & makes adjustments in patient care are indicated.
16. Assists in discharge planning & referrals to the community for ongoing services.
LEVEL OF EDUCATION/TRAINING/QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor’s or Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Sociology or Psychology.
2. Ability to apply the concepts of customer service in the workplace. Ability to use good professional judgment. Detail oriented. Ability to work independently, with minimal direct supervision.
3. Excellent organizational, prioritization, and interpersonal communication skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
4. Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet critical deadlines. Ability to meet short and long-term goals and project deadlines.
5. Respect for the confidentiality of all communications required within job duties, including client/employee records and documents, and electronic transmission by voice, data, and wire.
6. Experience with multi-cultural/multi-lingual populations and multi-disciplinary teams.
7. Knowledge in mental health a skill in dealing with population.
8. Knowledge of PSR, crisis intervention procedures, assessment skills, planning & techniques, principles & practices of social & psychological casework & social welfare resources available in the community & hospital.
9. Knowledge of current social & economic conditions, trends and problems.
10. Analytical skills sufficiently strong to interpret situations and define the appropriate course of action.
11. Being able to explain technical data in a form understandable by patients, families, and agency staff.
12. Good interpersonal skills.
13. Skilled in organizing & prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines.
14. Possess a record void of negative reports with the Louisiana state nurse aid registry and the Louisiana direct service worker registry.
