Job Description

Position: Middle School Guidance Counselor

School Year: 2025-26

Job Summary

The Guidance Counselor will oversee academic scheduling, transfers, and maintain official student records. The
Guidance Counselor will also assist students with social development, and provide direct and indirect services to
students experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioral problems that interfere with their performance in school
while facilitating communication among school, home, and community providers. The Guidance Counselor will consult
with teachers, staff, administration, and parents to promote academic success and personal well-being. The person in
this position works under the direction of the building principal and special education director.

Duties

1. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with students that encourage the use of the counselor as
a student resource.

2. Counsel students who are experiencing difficult situations within the school day or experience stress that
impacts learning.

3. Counsel students regarding educational issues, such as course and program selection, class scheduling,
graduation requirements, college entrance requirements, and student registration.

4. Participate in planning, modifying, and evaluating educational advancement, career goals, and post-secondary
plans.

5. Oversee academic scheduling, transfers, and maintain official student records in partnership with the school
principal.

6. Identify barriers to student success and consult with others to resolve these barriers and discuss student
progress.

7. Consult with school staff, parents, and other community resources to promote students’ academic success and
personal wellbeing.

8. Refer students with critical/special needs to the appropriate school supports and crisis intervention resources.
9. Establish priorities and use time effectively to meet the needs of students and respond to messages/concerns

in a timely and professional manner.
10. Maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality in communications/interactions and inform students of limits on

a minor’s rights to confidentiality.


11. Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by law, district policy, and administrative
regulations.

12. Provide special services such as orientation, transition programs, targeted intervention/prevention,
achievement test-prep, and career day.

13. Provide direct and consultative services to parents (individually or as part of a group) concerning poor school
attendance, lack of motivation in school, lack of consistency in goals between school and home, lack of
adequate parenting skills which affect school performance, and other problems at home which prevent a
student from functioning adequately at school.

14. Provide services (individually or as part of a group) to students, when determined necessary by teacher
referral and/or subsequent assessment of the social worker, or when a staffing team so designates, or when
requested to intervene by building principal based on school problems.

15. Continue professional growth and development through attendance at workshops, seminars, college courses,
and memberships to professional organizations.

16. Participate in building leadership teams and contribute to district committees or team planning activities.
17. May be required to perform other tasks as assigned by the Superintendent or the Board of Education.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Hold an Illinois Professional Education License. School Counselor Endorsement preferred, but not required.
2. Proficiency in counseling and in other functions that may be needed as supplements to examinations.
3. Ability to guard, maintain, and preserve confidential information.
4. Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
5. Ability to communicate to students, parents, and staff in an acceptable/courteous manner.
6. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills to work with students, teachers, educational

support personnel, building administrators, and the general public.
7. Ability to enforce school regulations and policies in a professional manner.
8. Ability to maintain positive and good working relationships with fellow employees and pupils.
