Job Summary

Supervise daily operations of production department, ensuring that production goals are met while maintaining quality standards and safety. Responsibilities include maintaining an active presence on the production floor to monitor workflow, address production, quality and machinery issues, coach employees, reinforce standard operating procedures, and promote good communications and teamwork with other supervisors and manufacturing support teams.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinates shift resources to ensure priorities are being addressed
  • Assess and plan shift staffing needs
  • Prioritizes customer needs and production for the shift
  • Ensures all employees are working safely and following all safety rules and procedures
  • Participates in interviewing perspective employees as needed
  • Provides Leadman direction and provide support for employees as needed during shift
  • Coordinates job training for new hires and evaluates performance of new hires
  • Makes decisions on hiring of probationary employees
  • Educates employees in product language, equipment operation, safety, quality, housekeeping, and problem solving
  • Consults with maintenance and operations management to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Assists in development of new training programs to assure employee and product quality
  • Provides leadership and coaching to employees
  • Coordinates regularly scheduled safety meetings, toolbox talks, safety training, and other safety related activities for shift
  • Works closely with operations to minimize downtime and reduce waste including scrap and rework of material
  • Supports plant quality as needed by providing information needed to perform root cause analysis on failures and assists in developing corrective action plans
  • Interprets and enforces all established work rules and policies
  • Addresses employee performance or behavioral issues as established in work rules, company policies, and/or collective bargaining agreement; may administer discipline as necessary
  • Participate in safety committee and supervisor meetings
  • Attends daily shift meetings and completes daily shift reports
  • Administer attendance policy, review and approve employee time records, PTO, and other requests for leave based on company policy and within designated deadlines.
  • Participates, coordinates, and implements Continuous Improvement actions

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Attend external trainings and/or conferences on occasion
  • Participate in or lead certain committees/ teams.
  • May be required to work other shifts depending on needs.

Working Conditions

85% production floor, standing; 15% office setting sitting down. Steel Rail manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, industrial machinery, overhead cranes, and hot metal work processes. PPE mandatory and varies depending on operation.

Required Knowledge, Experience and Education

Education:

· High School Diploma (or equivalent) required. College degree in business management or post secondary technical certification preferred

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

· 3 years’ supervisory experience with lean manufacturing principles desired

· Excellent communication and organizational skills

· Basic Math skills

· Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook)

· Manufacturing/union environment experience, helpful but not required

· Strong leadership skills and ability to manage teams
