Description
The primary purpose of this position is to provide clinical laboratory support. The clinical laboratory is a College of American Pathology accredited high complexity laboratory, requiring the applicant to meet CAP standards for high complexity testing. The clinical laboratory's purpose is to monitor the health of space crews, occupational medicine patients, and research subjects. Specifically, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist will collect, process, and analyze blood, serum and urine specimens from astronaut examinations, annual physicals, diagnostic examinations, and mission-related examinations. This position will collect and process samples for biochemical, immunological, and hematological assessments. This position performs phlebotomy on clinical and research patients. In addition, this position is responsible for providing oversight for research collections and testing.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform assigned tasks in all sections of the laboratory on a rotation with the other technologists.
- Provide laboratory analyses for all areas of the laboratory for various clients.
- Support Clinical Laboratory activities for the International Space Station, Human Test Subject facility, and Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS)-approved experiments for Johnson Space Center investigators.
- Monitor inventory, order supplies, and provide maintenance for instruments as required.
- Obtain product information from vendors and requisition reagents and expendable supplies in order to meet and maintain (CLIA, ISO, VPP) as required.
- Participate in bi-annual CAP inspections and self-inspections.
Requirements
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Required:
- Bachelor's of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from an accredited university.
- Certification with American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP)
- At least five (6) years of general clinical laboratory experience.
SKILLS
Required:
- Excellent analytical skills and communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision, to conduct routine instrument maintenance, and to monitor quality control procedures in specific departments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Desired:
- Experience in evaluating clinical laboratory instrumentation and procedure writing.
