Location : Buffalo Grove, IL
Date Available : May 27 - August 8th.
Summary : This variety camp is in need of Unit Heads who can address campers’ needs and issues, check-in with parents periodically, ensure programming schedules, and be aware of where campers and staff are at all times in the event of an emergency. Unit Heads must have terrific management skills, some experience with supervising staff, and the ability to design and implement camp activities. Additional requirements include the ability to multitask, effectively communicate, and have a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
Responsibilities :
- Attend camp training and participate in training sessions, staff meetings, special camp activities, and the full camp session.
- Check-in with parents periodically and respond to parent questions in a timely manner.
- Serve as a member of the summer administrative team to give and get daily updates, work with the Camp Director to maintain the quality of programming and staff excellence, and coordinate daily schedules.
- Communicate daily with counselors in her / his unit to give updates from summer administrative staff team, hear counselor's concerns, brainstorm solutions to challenges with children, peers, etc. Facilitate check-in meetings of the unit staff frequently.
- Supervise and support counselors by making decisions based on NSDC policies, helping counselors follow procedures outlined in the policy manual, helping counselors self-evaluate their job performances.
- Model effective communication skills and work ethic by being available to help campers and counselors during programmed activities.
- Ensure that all counselors (and their campers) in your unit attend appropriate meetings and programmed activities.
- Must be detail-oriented, proactive, and organized.
- Handle any camper behavior or social issues and communicate them with the Director and be comfortable with medical / allergy needs of campers.
- Ensure the safety of all counselors and campers in your unit (and throughout camp). Must be comfortable implementing emergency plans (i.e., weather). Be aware of where campers and staff are at all times in the event of an emergency.
- Maintain a safe a clean environment for campers and fellow staff.
- Report all accidents, illnesses, and unusual circumstances to your supervisor and supervise camper health and safety.
- Maintain confidentially and professional relationship with parents and other staff.
- Must be able to walk most of the day, lift 40 pounds, and be comfortable leading their camp group.
- Act as a positive role model, who empowers campers to learn and experience new situations and maintain a positive attitude in difficult times.
- Abide by the JCYS Employee Handbook and follow all policies, procedures, and safety protocol.
- Be a JCYS ambassador and positively represent the agency in all settings.
