In the Basic Needs Navigation Internship, graduate students in Master of Social Work degree programs will develop clinical skills to support clients in emergent situations and increase knowledge of available community resources. The internship offers a firsthand look at how social welfare policy affects individuals. An intern in this program performs assessments, navigates community resources, and utilizes trauma-informed clinical skills to provide short-term and long-term support for people seeking financial help. This is a unique opportunity to explore the niche (but growing) field of financial social work.

Responsibilities Include
- Counsel adult clients facing economic hardship 1:1 to take steps toward financial sustainability. Clients frequently have a mental health diagnosis or other disability diagnosis.
- Virtual/telephonic supportive counseling, needs assessment, and application support
- Develop knowledge of low-income resources at local, state, and federal levels; educate callers.
- Utilize clinical approaches: motivational interviewing, social casework, psychoeducation, supportive counseling, needs assessment, and more
- Provide short-term, transitional case management and advocacy for callers who need help to connect with suggested resources
- Coordinate with and refer to internal JF&CS programs and external providers for domestic violence, early childhood, disabilities, and aging supports
- Participate in team meetings, maintain clinical record documentation, daily progress notes, service plans and goal assessments.
- Paid stipend of up to $2,400 per internship year
- Field placement supervision from LICSW
- Potential for some hybrid work
- Reimbursement for client travel
- Access to training and agency-wide intern seminar program
- Ability to attend internship at the JF&CS office in Waltham, MA during 9am-5pm weekday business hours
- Meet with clients telephonically, virtually, or in-person when appropriate
- 3-day/24 hour internship (MSW second or advanced year; 20 hour availability will be considered)
