2025 Summer Camp Extended Care Counselor

Summary:

Under the direction of the Camp & Youth Director, the Extended Care Camp Counselor will interact with and supervise campers ages 5-13 years old. This position is specifically 3:00pm-6:00pm daily, Monday-Friday working with campers in our Extended Care program and assisting with the end of the regular camp day. Time commitment for this position is 8:30am-5:00pm Monday Through Friday during the months of June-August, additional hours as needed. Must be able to commit to the majority of 9 weeks, June 2nd - August 1^st, 2025 with the option to remain on through August 15th^th.  Additional hours may be available during the summer.

Extended Care Camp Counselor will assist with planning and implementing afternoon camp activities for a group of campers enrolled in the Extended Care program. Work to ensure that the end of the camp day operates in a safe manner at all times, and assure the implementation of group activities while creating a welcoming and enjoyable experience for all. Extended Camp Care Counselor are expected to uphold and role model the values of Camp Shalom.

Areas of Responsibility

• Must have the knowledge of campers’ whereabouts at all times.
• Actively facilitate camper development in recreational activities, social skills development, values, multi-cultural and environmental awareness. 
• Maintain a positive attitude and conduct with the staff team as a positive role model. 
• Adhere to and enforce camp policies and procedures in a safe manner at all times.  
• Attendance at staff meetings and pre-camp training (mandatory) 
• Be prompt to all work shifts and assignments adhering to the daily camp schedule and operating calendar.
• Maintains all camp equipment and supplies. 
• Care about and give attention to campers’ needs. 
• Performs all other duties as assigned by Camp Leadership.

Qualifications

Qualifications and competencies:

Education and/or experience:

• Minimum of 15 years of age (over 16 years preferred)
• ECE units or Recreation units desired

Specific Certification Requirements:

• Current American Red Cross CPR for Child and Adult or willingness to obtain

• Current American Red Cross First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain
• If over 18 years old - Completion and clearance of background fingerprint assessment via the JSV Specific Live scan location.
• If under 18 years old - current Work Permit

** Employees at JSV may have availability to attend in-house Certification courses, please check with the Camp Director as to availability.  

Language skills:

• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, co-workers, volunteers, members, parents, donors and the general public

• Must possess the ability to make sound independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action

• Ability to work both in an outside and inside environment, different temperature extremes. 
• Ability and willingness to get in the swimming pool to supervise swimming time.
