Position Summary: The Applications Engineer evaluates customer needs and develops solutions in support of the JLS Business Pipeline. This role is responsible for creating concepts, budgets, layouts, and proposals to directly support the Sales team, and will work with Design Engineering to ensure the built system meets the customer’s needs.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Evaluate customer needs and gather information about their products and facility; develop requirements associated with the customer’s needs
- Ascertain if JLS is a “good fit” to supply a solution through a solid understanding of our technical capabilities, strategic vision, and active testing and evaluation of customer samples
- Conceptualize solutions that meet the requirements
- Work with Test Engineering to develop and prototype new application tools and strategies
- Collaborate with customers, sales, and engineering to ensure full stakeholder buy-in for solutions
- Gather external vendor information for incorporation into solutions
- Determine expected costs and establish budgets required to implement the conceptualized solution
- Create system layouts that fit our proposed system into the customer’s available space
- Effectively convey the proposed solution in a formal written proposal
- Transition purchased solutions from the conceptual / proposed stage of a project into formal design and engineering where a solution will be manufactured
- Other duties as assigned
Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Robotics, or other related engineering field
- 5 - 10 years of relevant experience
- Proficient working knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Outlook & Excel. A background in SolidWorks is beneficial.
- Experience in the design and/or application of packaging machinery or material handling systems is required
- Ability to read and interpret complex technical specifications and drawings
- Existing knowledge of robotic systems is beneficial
- Ability to work independently, balancing multiple priorities with minimal supervision, including the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously (typically 3-12 projects at a time) with diverse challenges
- Ability to control costs, adhere to a schedule, and improve the quality of a product/service is required
- Strong critical & creative thinking skills
- Strong communication capabilities to communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
Work Environment:
Environment: Corporate office environment that requires regular use of desk, computer, keyboard, mouse, phone, and printers. May be subject to cold, wet, or hot manufacturing environments for periods of 8 hours or more.
Travel Requirements: 30%
Physical: Lift, push, pull-up to 25 pounds; fine manual dexterity; ability to sit for short periods of time; frequent walking or standing.
