The Hood College Department of Sociology and Social Work, housed in the Ruth Whitaker Holmes School of Behavioral and Health Sciences, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track social work position beginning August 2025. The Department awards a Bachelor of Arts degree in social work and is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The Department is committed to building a culturally diverse educational environment, with a focus on diversifying the faculty. We seek a faculty member with a demonstrated ability, or strong potential for success, in teaching across our generalist social work curriculum while contributing to the diversity and excellence of our programs and courses through their research, teaching, and service. In addition, candidates with prior administrative experience and knowledge of CSWE accreditation requirements will be given priority.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Teaching/Facilitation 

  • Demonstrated ability or strong potential for success in teaching across the generalist social work curriculum.
  •  Teach 15-21 credits per year using curriculum design in alignment with CSWE EPAS 2022 and a student-centered, equitable and inclusive pedagogy.
  • Advise social work majors from our diverse student body and contribute in other ways to the social work program, the department, and the School of Behavioral and Health Sciences, including the accreditation/reaffirmation and field education processes.

Research/Scholarship 

  • Conduct and publish field specific research to enhance the general body of knowledge in social work. Research related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in social work practice and/or education is of particular interest to the department. Collaborative research with undergraduate and graduate students is encouraged.
  • Present research findings and other academic papers at national or professional conferences.
  • Work in partnership with the Office of Institutional Advancement to pursue grant funding opportunities as appropriate. 

Service

  • Support and participate in college committees and professional organizations to develop professional partnerships and meet the strategic goals of the institution.
  • Cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
  • Support all college initiatives to recruit and retain talented students.
  • Serve as an active member of the department and Hood College community.

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education/Experience 

By the position start date, applicants must have

  • A doctorate in social work (DSW/PhD) or a related field
  • A master’s degree in social work from a CSWE accredited institution,
  • Teaching experience in an accredited social work program,
  • At least two years of post-master’s social work practice experience
  • Candidates should be licensed, or license-eligible, as a social worker in Maryland. Candidates must have demonstrated experience  working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with program administrative experience, preferably in an undergraduate BSW program.

Technology Skills 

Proficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail and Internet. Ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.

Compensation 

The expected salary range for this position ranges from $60,000 to $64,000 depending on circumstances including an applicant’s skills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications, prior job experience, training, and other relevant factors. Additional compensation for work completed beyond the minimum contracted teaching load may be provided.  Hood College has provided a compensation range representing its good faith estimate of what the College may pay for the position at the time of posting. The College may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.
