Under the supervision of the Chair of the Department of Art & Archaeology, the Studio Arts Studio Manager assists undergraduate and graduate students, adjunct and full-time faculty with day-to-day departmental operations and provides for a safe and well-equipped environment in all instructional areas of the studio arts programs.

The Studio Arts Studio Manager is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the studio spaces and facilities used by the Studio Arts programs including the BA Studio Art concentration, the BA Art Education concentration, the BA Art Therapy concentration, the minors in Studio Art and Graphic Design, and the Graduate programs in Ceramic Arts. The Studio Manager facilitates and promotes the educational and safety needs of faculty, students and the general public in connection with the studio art offerings of the college and maintains a financial record of income and expenses within the departmental budget.

Other responsibilities include administrative tasks associated with managing the studio arts spaces and supplies, and providing various forms of administrative support for departmental programs.

Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Management (40%)

  • Manage art studio operations and procedures to ensure studios are equipped and prepared for classes, lectures and workshops.
  • Maintain supply and equipment inventories for printmaking, photography, drawing and painting, and ceramics studios.
  • Prepare and submit orders for studio supplies and maintain related accounting/budgetary systems and records.
  • Manage scheduled firings for gas/wood and electric fired kilns for faculty, undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Train students on safe equipment use in printmaking, painting/drawing studios, as well as darkroom and photography/matt/framing studio, and ceramic studios.
  • Train and supervise student workers/interns, technicians and volunteers.
  • Coordinate work schedules for student workers.
  • Work with faculty to develop and monitor studio usage rules, procedures and safety.
  • Maintain art studios in compliance with environmental codes and OSHA standards for safety.
  • Manage MSDS information/documentation for materials in all studios.
  • Coordinate disposal of hazardous materials in conjunction with the campus chemical safety officer.
  • Generate work orders requesting movement of equipment and supplies, and attention from facilities and/or housekeeping team.
  • Inspect and arrange for routine maintenance, repairs, and/or updating of all mechanical studio equipment and facilities.
  • Maintain the following studios
    • Tatem photographic – darkroom T301, technology classroom T216
    • Tatem printmaking – design and printmaking studio T101
    • Tatem ceramic – wheel studio and classroom T1, sculpture studio T2, plaster lab T3, Glaze Mixing lab T4, materials storage T2A, kiln room T2B, clay mixing room T2C, clay storage T13
    • Tatem drawing/painting – drawing and painting studio T201, senior studio T19
    • Hodson Annex -, graduate student studio space HO135, glaze technology lab HO139, outdoor kiln pavilion, materials storage areas HO130, second level studio HO234

    Administrative (35%)

    • Assist with non-academic aspects of the Studio Arts and Ceramic Arts programs, including various promotional and administrative tasks as needed.
    • Assist with administrative tasks related to community programs in ceramics, drawing and painting.
    • Serve as a purchasing agent for supplies and application of proper budget coding to invoices and in departmental financial records.
    • Obtain approval and initiate purchasing process for departmental studio supplies and equipment.
    • Implement and facilitate adjunct faculty equipment and safety compliance training in conjunction with the Director of the Graduate Ceramic Arts Program, and Chair of the Department of Art & Archaeology.
    • Assist in the facilitation and/or promotion of special projects, workshops and guest lectures.
    • Assist in the preparation of studio and/or ceramics materials (clays, glazes, ) as needed for classes and/or workshops.
    • Maintain financial and administrative records and reports for studio arts program supply and equipment expenses in accordance with budget requirements.
    • Assist with gathering and organizing data related to the studio arts programs for various internal reports as needed.
    • Maintain records of donations in conjunction with the Institutional Advancement office.
    • Assist with record keeping and maintenance of any departmentally-housed collections of objects, artworks, and/or research resources.
    • Facilitate and maintain a photographic record of studio activities and special events, and provide images to the Office of Marketing and Communications, the Graduate School, or other college offices as requested.
    • Assist in the maintenance of departmental/studio art program social media sites for promotion and recruitment purposes.
    • Assist departmental faculty and the Office of Marketing and Communications, and the Graduate School on various aspects of program publicity and marketing as needed.
    • Work with faculty to project and plan for future needs of studios and classes and facilitate departmental communication about studio/facilities needs.
    • Maintain confidential records in accordance with College policies and legal requirements.
    • Provide regular reports to the Chair of the Department of Art & Archaeology and Director of the Graduate Programs in Ceramic Arts on all matters related to the studio arts studios/classrooms.
    • Perform other job-related duties as necessary.

      Mentoring and Support (25%)

      • Maintain an atmosphere of encouragement and support for students and faculty within the studio spaces.
      • Work individually and with small groups of students to assist in the proper use of studio equipment at all levels of proficiency.
      • Prepare classrooms and studios for workshop sessions, visiting artists, and semester long courses.
      • Conduct instructional sessions, as needed, for faculty and student workers on safe kiln operation, glaze mixing, equipment operation, and other related activities with a focus on maintaining OSHA safety standards.
      • Conduct instructional sessions for faculty and student workers on safety issues applicable to the various studio environments.
      • Assist faculty and students in loading and firing of kilns.
      • Work closely with departmental faculty to serve and promote the growth and development of the studio arts programs.

      Education and/or Experience

      Minimum Requirements/Qualifications

      Bachelor’s degree or higher in studio arts or related field, and a minimum of 2 years of art studio management experience in college/instructional environments or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Thorough understanding of best studio arts practices across various media and current safety standards and requirements is necessary.

      Technology Skills

      Knowledge of kiln technology with extensive experience operating manual and digitally controlled electric kilns for bisque and glaze firings. Technical expertise in firing a variety of atmospheric kilns including: gas, wood, salt and soda processes. Knowledge of clay and glaze chemistry, efficient processes of reclaiming, recycling, and de-airing clay, along with the proper disposal of waste glaze. Knowledge of presses utilized in printmaking studio. Experience in digital and traditional photography, darkroom processes, scanning and image manipulation software.

      Proficient in software such as Microsoft Office, Outlook, Blackboard, Quicken, Adobe Creative Suite, internet applications, and current social media platforms. Experienced with financial and administrative processes within an educational/not-for-profit environment.

      Language Skills

      Exceptional language and written communication skills. Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customer inquiries in person, via email and by telephone. Able to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Able to write and interpret training materials, marketing materials, reports, and correspondence. Capable of speaking effectively before groups of students, faculty, staff, and other constituents.

      Mathematical Skills

      Ability to work with and apply basic mathematical concepts in a timely and accurate manner, either manually or by using a calculator. Ability to use financial software applications and generate budgetary data for monitoring expenses and preparing annual reports.

      Reasoning Ability

      Able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Able to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusion. Able to work in the theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

      Compensation

      This is a position with an annual starting salary range of $34,000 to $38,000 depending on circumstances including an applicant’s skills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications, prior job experience, training, and other relevant factors. Hood College has provided a compensation range representing its good faith estimate of what the College may pay for the position at the time of posting. The College may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.
